Responsive design

Hello!

I would like to know how do you feel about making the website responsive to different browser widths.

Currently, this is how the Rails Core page looks when a Safari window is stretched, and on an iPhone:

before-safari
before-iphone

I've spent a couple of hours to change the HTML/CSS code so that the page would look exactly the same at a normal browser resolution, but would adapt nicely to a smaller resolution:

after-safari
after-iphone

Before I create a full pull request, which would make all the pages responsive, I would like to know if you have anything against this change. My concern is not about the actual HTML/CSS code (we can discuss about that), but more if you think that this would be a good overall change.

I invite you to try the final result by yourself by pointing your browser to:

and comparing them with the current ones. Thanks ๐ŸŽ€

Incorrect anchor tags on rubyonrails.org/documentation

http://rubyonrails.org/documentation contains an extraneous anchor tag:

Screen Shot 2012-12-12 at 9 52 48 AM

As we can see in the markup:

<div class="main">
<a> </a>
<p>
  <a>When you're just getting started or want to learn about Rails in general, the </a>
  <a href="http://guides.rubyonrails.org/">Rails Guides</a>
  is a great way to compliment the API section as well. It's being maintained as part of
  <a href="http://github.com/lifo/docrails/tree/master">the docrails project</a>.
</p>
</div>

There are also a number of empty anchor tags on the page but at least those do not result in styled text appearing as if it is a clickable link.

Looking at this repository I thought this would be generated by https://github.com/rails/rails.github.com/blob/master/documentation/index.html but the markup there is significantly different that what I see on the live site.

Is this even the correct repository for issues with http://rubyonrails.org/ site content?

New design for Rails 5?

The rubyonrails.org homepage looks a little dated. It was last updated nearly 10 years ago, for the release of Rails 1.0.

It'd be nice to refresh the design for the Rails 5.0 release.

Maybe a company that relies Rails can donate time to make a new design? I'd be happy to help out, though I'm not a designer. (If someone provides a design, I'd be happy to implement in HTML and Sass with Middleman.)

Thoughts?

Use gender-neutral term to describe the core team

I ran across the core team page the other day and noticed the phrase "made men" in the header. Although the list does seem to be all men right now it seems a bit (accidentally, I'm sure) presumptuous to use the phrase. I wonder if there is another phrase that has similar connotations of loyalty and hard work that doesn't specify gender?

I don't have a specific suggestion for what that phrase should be (beyond searching the thesaurus for "hard-working") but I'm hoping that it can be narrowed down here and am willing to help.

I'll also note that the header containing the phrase is a raster image and the source file doesn't appear to be in this repo.

I hope that this can kick off a good conversation. ๐Ÿ˜„
