quickfolders's Issues

QF 4.16 doesn't validate if no default identity is defined

If an account has no default identity it should log this in the Javascript error console. Instead the validation fails silently and the following error is shown:

Error in QuickFolders.Options.decryptLicense():

logDebug is not defined quickfolders-register.js:552

Dragging messages in a three or more levels nested folder

When you try to drag a message in a folder present in the Quickfolders menu you can see the first level of nested folders but no other level.
That is if the folder structure is
Folder > Subfolder 1 > Sub-Subfolder 1 you cannot drop your message in the Sub-Subfolder 1 subfolder

Upgrade to TB78

I upgraded to Thunderbird 78.0 (due to security issue) and QuickFolders is disabled, marked as unsupported. Could you provide information about availability to TB78 ?
Thanks

Make the Donate button and page more prominent...

Axel, as I mentioned in my long 28-point email 6/9/2020 2:57pm,
you should make the Donate button and Donate page more prominent.
They're too easy to miss, even when someone is actively looking
for them:

  1. Just tripped across the Donate page. I was looking for it
before but ended up just buying Pro for a year instead.
Now, at the Donate page, I was able to donate the $100
I had in mind, not just the $9/year subscription fee.
I found it by clicking on "You're brilliant. Can I reward you?"
    in the FAQ at:

You should make the Donate button/page more prominent. I gave
up on donating and just bought the Pro version, then later
    found the Donate page.

See my description at:

of how I found the Premium Features page from a link on the
Donate page:

I clicked the link and bought the Pro version. It wasn't until much
later that I happened to go back to the Donate page and scrolled
down far enough to discover the possibility to donating more than
the mere $9 cost of the Pro version.

The Donate info about PayPal, etc. should be easier to find. Even
though I was looking for it, I didn't see it on the Donate page.

Also, finding the Donate page itself was not easy. I started out
wanting to donate $100. I was already using QF for about a year.
Here's how I finally found the Donate page:

  1. Clicked the QF cog at the top left for a dropdown menu
  2. Clicked QuickFolder Options... to see Options dialog
  3. Clicked Quick Help tab
  4. Clicked "Find detailed information at the QuickFolders homepage at
    quickfolders.org..." to go to http://quickfolders.org
  5. Clicked "FAQ + Tips" tab to go to http://quickfolders.org/faq_tips.html
  6. Clicked "You're brilliant. Can I reward you?" to see its answer
  7. Clicked "Just click here for detail." to see the Donate page

Along the way, I tried lots of other clicks, read lots of text,
etc. It took a LONG time to find the Donate page. And even then
I ended up buying getting diverted and bought a $9 Pro license
instead of making a $100 donation. Doh!

Account icon lost on restart

As subject, you can setup a custom icon for every different account (accounts list on the left), but after program restart, the visualisation is broken and icon reverts to its default. Icon is still stored (you can check it with right click on the account name), simply it is not displayed anymore.
Believe me or not, but this would be the most important feature of your addon: I have to deal with > than 20 accounts, and a visual help about it would be really appreciated.

Typos in documentation...

Axel, when I reported some typos in the docs, you said in your
6/9/2002 4:43pm email reply:

ok, I fixed the other ones and pushed to github!

I was poking around just now, trying to find the fixes, but can't
see them at GitHub. Is all the code in the "chrome" folder? There
doesn't seem to be much in the other files or folders. In fact, it
pretty much all seems to be in chrome/content. I searched the Git
log via the History button at:

Didn't find any hint that the typos were fixed. So I'm submitting
them as bugs:

    • mailsand --> mails and
    • pleasee --> please
    • "_Others" --> "Others" (or use _Others also later in the
      same paragraph)
    • "alread" --> "already"
    • "maile" --> "mail"
    • "ar" --> "are"

Hmmm... I think all except the "_Others" typo are now fixed
in the public web page. Maybe you're not keeping the public
web pages in GitHub?

Anyhow, here are some more typos that I had not yet reported:

    • "foldere" --> "folder"
    • "there I not own" --> "therefore I do not own"
    • "creating you own" --> "creating your own"
    • "Thereforce" --> "Therefore"

Open message panel behaviour

When moving a message open in the panel via Ctrl-M the message is moved, the next message is open in the new panel and the current message ( i.e. message that was moved) stays open as a current open panel.

Is there any chance to enforce following scenario:

  • move message to defined folder
  • open next message in same folder (best way is to use the filter that is used in the on a folder if opened)

Or just close the current message pannel and concetrate on panel with the next message.

Of course Ctrl-W is a good workaround, but I am a little bit lazy.

Advertise the Premium features more prominently...

Axel, I mentioned in a another ticket that you should show
the Donate button/page more prominently:

The same is true of the Premium features of the Pro edition.
I went to:

and read all about QuickFolders, but saw almost no mention of
the Pro version with its Premium features.

The only exception was 2 brief mentions buried in the "Main
Toolbar Elements" documentation.  One mention of the "Pro"
settings:

quickMove button: use this button to move emails to any other folder
quickly. drag on your mails and start typing a folder name. For
advanced configuration of this feature and a keyboard shortcut,
please refer to the "Pro" settings.

and one mention of the Free version:

Reading List: use this button to bookmark emails permanently. Click
on the email title to jump to it or use SHIFT or CTRL to open the
mail in a new tab / window. The number of bookmarks is limited in
the Free version of QuickFolders.

Today, I wanted to see the Premium page.  I had already found and
bought the Pro version.  I had also already found and read the docs
about it, and taken notes about typos in the docs.  Today, I wanted to
see the Premium page again, to confirm that the typos were still
there, as I submitted bug tickets at GitHub.  But I STILL had trouble
finding the Premium page.

I went to:

and saw 9 tabs along the top:

  1. Home
  2. Installation
  3. Version History
  4. FAQ + Tips
  5. Support QuickFolders!
  6. Screenshots
  7. Bugs + Feature Requests
  8. quickFilters
  9. Menu On Top

Nothing obvious there about a Pro version.  I clicked "Support
QuickFolders!" and saw a page with the same 9 tabs at:

It also has what looks like a button:

  • Get QuickFolders Pro for 2018!

I clicked that but nothing happened.

It also has what looks like another button:

  • QUICKFOLDERS PRO - ESR 2020 JUBILEE SALE

I clicked that but nothing happened.

I saw the text:

If you've found QuickFolders to improve your mail life, please buy a
QuickFolders Pro license.

Also not clickable.

Then I stopped quickly scanning the page and settled down to
the task of actually reading all the text.  I found:

Support the future of QuickFolders and enjoy unlimited Premium
Features
. You can purchase a license from QuickFolders options,
using the QuickFolders Pro tab. It's super easy and helps future
proof this Add-on.

I clicked the Premium Features link and was finally able to
read about the "QuickFolders Pro: Premium Features" at:

At that page, there are the same 9 tabs, except that these 2 tabs
vanish:
8. quickFilters
9. Menu On Top

to be replaced by:
8. Premium Functions

OK.  So, are "Premium Functions" different from "Premium Features"?
I clicked the tab to find out.  But it took me to the page I was
already seeing.

That "Premium Functions" tab should be called "Premium Features"
for consistency and should be displayed at all pages, not just
the page it jumps to.

Even after I found this page, there was no link to buy a license.
It says:

See the support page on how to obtain a licensee.

I clicked the support page link, which took me back to:

I continued reading beyond the Premium Features link that
I had previously clicked.  Found:

You can purchase a license from QuickFolders options, using the
QuickFolders Pro tab.

Went back to Thunderbird, clicked the QuickFolders cog, opened
the Options dialog and clicked the QuickFolders Pro tab.
This might be where I finally purchased the license.
I'm not sure any more.  It currently shows that I have a
license, so it's not offering me a chance to buy one.

Or maybe when I clicked the QuickFolders cog, instead of going
to the Options dialog, I saw the menu item further down called:

  • QuickFolders Pro License...

I assumed clicking there would take me to the same page as
clicking the QuickFolders Pro tab of the Options dialog.&nbsp
Not true.  It shows an entirely different page with info
(and non-clickable button-looking things) about:

  • Annual License
  • Updates
  • Vouchers

It also has buttons for:

  • Extend License
  • Buy Domain License

Anyhow, I think I bought my license at one or the other of
those places.

Suggested actions to make the Pro version with Premium Features
easier to find/buy:

  • Discuss the Pro version in the main http://quickfolders.org
    page
  • Add "Premium Features" tab to more pages, not just the
    "Premium Features" page
  • Make "Get QuickFolders Pro for 2018!" a clickable link to:
  • Make "QUICKFOLDERS PRO - ESR 2020 JUBILEE SALE" a clickable
    link to:
  • Make "If you've found QuickFolders to improve your mail life,
please buy a QuickFolders Pro license." a clickable link to:
  • Change "Premium Functions" to "Premium Features" anywhere that
    it's used
  • Add a link at the Premium Features page:
to go to a page to purchase a license.
Make that link very prominent on the Premium Features page.
  • Rationalize the "QuickFolders Pro License..." menu option
with the QuickFolders Pro tab of the Options dialog.
Why are there 2 that go to different unrelated places?
It's confusing.  If it makes sense to have 2 different
places, perhaps add a link from one to the other and vice
    versa.

remembering the last folder correctly

I think there is a bug for QuickMove and QuickJump when there are multiple (sub)folders with the same name. (QuickFolders 4.17.5)

Suppose I have subfolders "a/target" and "b/target". When I use the hotkeys for QuickMove or QuickJump and type "target", I get a drop-down that lists both subfolders. I pick the one I want. Suppose I pick "b/target". If I later do one of those hotkeys, the search box is pre-filled with the remembered subfolder name "target". If I hit enter to accept it, it seems to always go to the alphabetically first one (in this case, "a/target").

What I expected is that it remembered that I chose "b/target" last time, and that should be chosen if I just hit enter. Instead, I have to go to the search box, backspace over the last character and type it again to get the drop-down list again.

consolidating tool bars, and show on top instead of bottom

Hi,

Need a way to be able to move the tool bar to top (at least)

currently it's equipping 2 tool bars

one for main, which has the groups, and another at bottom (which has the ability to be selected and move the message to one of folders at main tool bar)

same if I open an email (as a window), the tool bar shows at the bottom

anyway, to be able to put in same tool bar?

if not, at least to be on top

regards,
snap 1 - Main window - 2 tool bars
snap 2 - Message window - 2 tool bars

Allow single-key keyboard shortcuts

Please consider adding the ability to press a single keyboard character to use the shortcuts quickMove / quickJump / etc, to allow for easier single-hand operation (for example: left hand uses keyboard, right hand uses mouse). This could be a configurable option.

The current best possible practice would be to cluster those shortcuts near, for example, the left SHIFT, so that you can use your left hand for all of it: SHIFT+Z, SHIFT+X, SHIFT+S, SHIFT+D. However, this can be error prone and would be improved by allowing pressing a single key.

Long folders menu scroll issues in Thunderbird 68 + 78

It seems that in the latest version (4.16) the autoscroll on larger folder menus is not working any more. If I want to drag a message to a folder lower on the list (not shown) the small arrow menu changes color but it does not scroll (NB: it works when not dragging a message just moving the mouse).

Scrolling during drag&drop on overlong menu chevrons not working in TB68

To debug, use Advanced > Debug Mode; Debug Mode > right-click and toggle
extensions.quickfolders.debug.dnd = true

drag+drop is hard to fix, this is a built in function from Thunderbird, so very likely that they caused the bug while removing xul support as determined by the mozilla-central overlords. Unfortunately there are not many functions / Add-ons that do something as crazy as scrolling on a chevron so it is likely nobody has noticed or nobody cares...

I can find a ton of bugs on touch screen issues, such as "long-tap", "long-press" etc. nothing on long menus or dragging on chevrons. Pretty much a prime example for an edge case.

Integration for Postbox v7

Hello,

I use QuickFolders on Postbox v5, and really like it. I've held back upgrading to newer Postbox versions due to lack of this extension. So, thank you for your work!

I noticed that they have reintroduced add on support in the form of Postbox Labs to v7. I can't find any developer documentation to point you to unfortunately, but they seem to be xpi files as before.

I wondered if you would consider integration with v7 of Postbox?

On the off chance, I did try to load this extension (after changing install.rdf to permit v7) but got the following error:

Incompatible Extension
Postbox can only use the system dictionaries installed on your Mac.

Feature request: move message to a specific folder

Right now there is an accelerated 'open specific folder': ALT-number, where number is displayed on the folder in the bar (with the right option setting).

There is a quickmove, which moves the selected messages, but the folder has to be selected each time (with a last-folder pre-selected option).

I find myself moving messages much more than opening folders; I'd like a key sequence to move a message to a specific folder in one modifier+key press.

I'm happy if its shift-alt-number matching the open folder model. I'm OK if the accelerator is settable on a per-folder basis.

And ideally I'd love to make the "move" the simpler alt-number one, and open the shift-alt-number (or whatever modifier).

Opt-1 does nothing, but Opt-2 through Opt-8 work fine...

The QF feature of Alt-1 through Alt-9 (Opt-1 through Opt-9) jumping
to tabs 1-9 is very handy. But for me, Opt-1 does not work. Opt-2
through Opt-9 work fine, but Opt-1 does nothing.

Current Folder Bar background styling is ignored in Thunderbird 68

In Thunderbird 68 the styling of Current Folder Toolbar background (advance tab) doesn't - react to the dropdown (dark / translucent / lightweight etc.)

This can be caused by entering a faulty css value once, and will always result in the "default" look (silver gradient)

image

Esc key to cancel quickMove also clears Cmd-Shift-K search box...

The Esc key cancels a quickMove operation, clearing the text typed
into the quickMove box and hiding the dropdown list of matches.
Good! But, it also clears the native TB "Filter these messages"
box at the top right of the TB window that I opened via Cmd-Shift-K.

Perhaps QF can catch the Esc key when the quickMove box is open and
prevent it from propagating to TB? Then Esc would cancel the
quickMove if one was pending, and would clear the "Filter these
messages" box otherwise. In JavaScript Web applications, it's easy
for each event handler to specify whether or not the event
(keystroke, mouse click, etc.) should propagate to other event
handlers for other containing HTML elements. Perhaps it's easy to
do here also?

That's how the "Find in page" box currently works. If I hit
Cmd-Shift-K to see the "Filter these messages" box, and type
something there, Esc clears what I typed. But while the filter
text is still showing, if I type Cmd-F to see the "Find in page"
box at the bottom left of the message body pane, and type in
some text to find, Esc hides the "Find in page" box, but does NOT
clear the "Filter these messages" box.

BTW, according to this old Bugzilla ticket:

the change to add this Esc key functionality in version 4.15 on
May 21, 2019 was supposed to add it only for Shift-Esc, not for
Esc w/o the Shift key. Was it coded wrong? Or is there a
pattern here caused by my use of Mac that unshifted keys do the
action intended for shifted keys? See this other ticket where
unshifted "s" does the action of Shift-S:

But note that this problem does not occur for all unshifted keys.
For example, unshifted "m" still toggles the native TB read/unread
status of a message, while Shift-M starts a QF quickMove operation.

In any case, I REALLY like the Esc key as a way to cancel a
quickMove. It is very consistent with other apps I've used on
Mac, Windows, Unix, Linux, VMS, etc. for decades. I started
using it naturally without having to read it in any docs.
But it would NEVER have occurred to me to use "Shift-Esc".

So, if it's possible to fix this bug, but continue to use
unshifted Esc, I would prefer that over changing to Shift-Esc.

Folders intermittently displayed as invalid / non existent

Sometimes existing folders we not found or show up as invalid. If they are in a QF tab or folder submenu they can be marked with the "broom" icon in this case:
image

It was suggested that this missing of folders is intermittent, so we need to gather data on it. If a folder becomes "invalid" (essentially, the file doesn't exist to QF at least with the current method of checking) during a Session can this lateron be repaired by clicking the "Refresh Visible Tabs" command?
image

Are there any other measures (during the session) apart from restarting Thunderbird to rectify this situation?

QF Pro feature "Skip Unread Folder" hides "Add star" function...

The QF Pro feature "Skip Unread Folder" works w/o the Shift key.

Therefore, hitting "s" does NOT do the native TB "Add star" function.
Instead, it jumps to the next unread message in the next folder.
Even when the Shift Key is not used. It should work only with Shift.

"/" should work with substring of folder name, not just prefix...

It would be handy if "/" in the quickMove box worked for any
substring of a parent folder name, not just for a prefix of
the parent folder name.

Other features of the quickMove box work with any substring.
For example, I can move a message to a parent folder, or jump
to a folder, by typing any substring of the folder name. But
the "/" feature, to specify a new or existing subfolder, works
only with a prefix of the parent folder name.

This seems to be an inconsistency for no good reason. For
example, it does not seem to be required to avoid massive
numbers of matches of parent folder names. If so, that would
be a problem for other features of the quickMove box that work
with any substring. I'm hoping there's no technical reason
to not make this change.

For me, substring is MUCH more handy because I prefix many of
my folder names with numeric prefixes like "0_", "1_", etc. to
order them within their parent folder. And having to remember
and type the numeric prefix is a nuisance.

"/" offers to create the 1st subfolder...

In the quickMove box, "/" offers to create a new subfolder. Nice!
It does so even if the parent folder has no other subfolders yet.

Personally, I LIKE that, don't want you to change anything, but it
contradicts what Axel said in a 6/11/2020 3:06am email. He said
it was intended to work only if there were already other subfolders.

did you already discover the use of / (forward slash) in the
quickMove box?
It is quite handy when you have forgotte whether you already
have a folder for customer "Fred". just type:
cus/Fre
and you will get matches. but also a possibility to create a new
folder (only if the parent already has child folders; then QF
assumes you may want to stick in multiple ones into the tree,
e.g. Customers/Axel, Customers/Bill, Customers/Fred)

Hot key to move current message to a folder

I would love to be able to assign a hot key (or hot keys) to a folder such that hitting that hot key would move the message to the specified folder. This could work from the message list (move one or however many messages are selected), or (if possible) from an open message in a viewing window - which would also close that reading window.

I would use hotkeys like Alt-Control (or Command-Control for Mac) with a letter or number, personally. I would prefer to use a single modifier (e.g., just Control or Alt) but while that would work for Mac (just Control) I doubt it will work for Windows.

There is another extension called Quick Folder Move, which only works up to Thunderbird 60, that does this sort of thing, and it is also open source, if you want to take a look at how someone did it.

Drag + new subfolder + space = problems

I did the following. Please see whether you can reproduce the bug.

  1. Dragged an e-mail my QuickFolders to a folder that had subfolders and chose the 'new subfolder' option.
  2. Entered a name for the new subfolder. That name contained a space.
    Results:
    i. The new folder was created but with a percentage sign replacing the space within its name.
ii. The e-mail did not get moved.

On ii, cf. #31.

Drag to Create New Subfolders from tab, folder names with space fail, (encoded as %20 / leading to duplicates)

Using TB latest 68.6.0 32 bit on Windows 10 Pro

Drag a file to a Quickfolder, hover over New Subfolders, and enter a two word name. Doesn't immediately show, mail NOT moved to new folder, remains in the inbox. Go to Thunderbird folders list, and the new folder has %20% instead of the space. In the file system, it's also %20 instead of the space. Correct that in TB and all is well.
Doing the above with a ONE word name and it works perfectly.
Pretty sure it USED TO work correctly for two word names also.

Documentation: "Pimp my tabs" should be "Bling my tabs"

There's a small typo on the faq+tips page.

In the "I can see no colors..." entry, when expanded, it says:

In Options, on the "Pimp my Tabs" page...

The page is now called "Blink my Tabs!", and the options seem to be different than described in the FAQ.

Not a big deal, but confusing to first timers.

quick move from search list fails if first mail is already in target folder

If you want to move a selection of mails to a specific folder, then that works well even if some of the mails are already in the target folder. However, it fails if the first of the messages is already in the target folder.

In my use case that is quite often the case: I select a whole thread and move it into a folder, but quite often the first of the mails (e.g., my initial message) is already in that folder and then it fails. Of course, one can select all and then unselect offending message, so there is a workaround, but it would be nice if the quick move would act on the others without the need to do that as it is easily overlooked first time and it works well if the messages are ordered differently.

Spaces in new folder names (on drag) create unexpected results

when dragging to a tab and choosing "create new subfolder" any folder names which contain spaces (or even have trailing spaces) can lead to problems or duplicates:

Their Name will be URL encoded in the folder tree

"test 1" becomes "test%201"

I believe this only happens in Thunderbird version 68 and later.

Hi,

QuickFolders sometimes resets View -> Folders -> Unified to View -> Folders -> All.

Unfortunately it is hard to reproduce. Sometimes I can click as often I want on QuickFolders tabs and my view settings stay in "unified" and sometimes I just click one time on a tab and the view changes to "all".
