I've also tried creating a new virtual env as suggested in issue 89 with no success.

Figured this out a while back by just generating the access token and secrets separately.

Glad you found a fix.
This error will get a more descriptive error message in the future as it is very confusing atm, it happens because you attempt to use a string with invalid characters, i.e. not in the set
=&;%+~,*_.-A-Za-z0-9
from requests-oauthlib.
