A UI kit for Godot 4.
People kept asking how I make my menus in godot, so I open sourced it.
Everything here is drawn in code. No sprites, no StyleBoxes, no theme files, i basically use the same approach i use for my custom engine projects. Each
widget renders itself in _draw() out of polygons and text, so it works at any
resolution and recolours from one palette file. The real reason I do it this way
is that every property ends up being a float you can tween. You cannot animate a
StyleBox, which is why most Godot menus sit still.
Made with Godot 4.7. No plugins or addons, just drop the folders in.
Play the live demo in your browser on itch.io, no download needed. Press J in there to switch all the juice off and compare.
Or clone this and run ./run.sh (or open the godot 4.7 proj if on windows).
These two are from an game i am making for a university assignment, built with the same approach.
More detail in media/doc.md.
I use this in my own projects so it will keep getting updated. Stuff on the list:
- a slider and a checkbox, there are none yet
- dropdown, tabs, modal dialog
- gamepad navigation that is more than ui_up and ui_down
- more screen looks, and saving CRT settings as a preset you can swap at runtime
- the texture and sound generators, I stripped them out to keep the repo small so they might come back later
- proper docs instead of media/doc.md
No promises on timing, I am a student and this is a side thing (also new to godot after a while). If something is broken open an issue. If you make something with it I would like to see it.
MIT. Do whatever you want with it.
Bundled assets:
- Sounds by Kenney, CC0
- Bungee font by David Jonathan Ross, SIL Open Font License
- Brand icons from Simple Icons, CC0
The demo is playable on itch, free, pay what you want if you feel like it. Supporting it there is what pays for the time I put into updates.
