CMake Notes

CMakeLists.txt Composition

command1(arg_a1, arg_a2, arg_a3 ...)

command2(arg_b1, arg_b2, arg_b3 ...)

CMake Commands

add_executable(<exec_name> <source_files>)

  • This command is used when we want an executable at the end of the process.
  • We have to provide the name of the final executable and the source files required to build the executable.
  • The naming sequence of the source files does not matter, BUT the name of the executable must be the first argument.

project(<project_name> VERSION <project_version>)

  • This command states the name of the project, e.g. 'calculator'
  • The version of the project is stated using 'VERSION ', e.g. 1.0.0

cmake_minimum_required(VERSION <cmake_version>)

  • This command states the minimum required CMake version.
  • We are telling CMake that all the features in the CMakeLists.txt are supported by that version.
  • It is important to test with other versions of CMake to ensure the most amount of people can use it.

add_library(<library_name> <source_files>)

target_link_libraries(<executable> <lib1> <lib2>)

  • This command links a library to an executable.

message(<mode_of_display> "the message")

  • Modes of Message Display
    • message("Hello World")
    • message(STATUS "Hello World")
    • message(DEBUG "Hello World")
    • message(WARNING "Hello World")
    • message(FATAL ERROR "Hello World")

set(<variable_name> <variable_value>)

  • NOTE: All the variables in CMake are of string type

    • Variable De-referencing: ${variable_name}
    • If you try to de-reference a variable that has not been set, it will give you an empty string
  • Strings & Lists:

    • set(NAME "Liam Ross") -> String 'NAME' = Liam Ross
    • set(NAME Liam Ross) -> List 'NAME' = Liam;Ross
  • Quoted & Unquoted Arguments

  • The subcommand tells CMake which operation is to be performed

    • APPEND
    • INSERT
    • FILTER
    • GET
    • JOIN
  • Setting a List variable:

  • List Commands:
    • APPEND

  • NOTE: The FIND subcommand will return -1 if the specified element was not found

  • Constants:

    • 1, ON, YES, TRUE, Y, a non-zero number: TRUE

    • DEFINED - Used to check if a variable is set or not set.
    • COMMAND - Used to check if a command exists or not.
    • EXISTS - Used to check if a file or directory exists or not.
  • if() Conditions | Boolean operators

    • if(NOT(VAR STREQUAL "test" OR VAR2 STREQUAL "test2"))

  • Name is the loop variable; Liam, Erin & Gerard are the items that are being looped through

  • Start value and end value is always inclusive

  • Looping over a list of lists

Targets

  • Every target in CMake has come properties and dependencies associated with it.
  • Target Properties
    • INTERFACE_LINK_DIRECTORIES
    • INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES
    • VERSION
    • SOURCES
  • The properties can be modified or retrieved using these commands:
    • set_target_properties
    • set_property
    • get_property
    • get_target_property
  • Targets can also have dependencies with one another.
  • This means that if targetB is a dependency of targetA, then targetA can only be build after targetB has been build successfully.

Propagating Target Properties

target_link_libraries(myapp PUBLIC <item1> <item2>)

  • Property: INTERFACE_LINK_LIBRARIES

target_link_libraries(myapp INTERFACE <item1> <item2>)

  • Property: INTERFACE_LINK_LIBRARIES

target_include_directories(my_math PUBLIC include) target_include_directories(my_math INTERFACE include)

  • Property: INTERFACE_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES

  • Of Target: my_math

  • Example: Calculator's Dependencies

    • target_link_libraries(calculator my_math my_print)
    • Property Propagation:
      • Properties of my_math:
        • Property A = aaa
        • Property B = bbb
        • Property C = ccc
      • Properties of my_print:
        • Property A = xxx
        • Property B = yyy
        • Property C = zzz
  • PUBLIC, PRIVATE or INTERFACE:

    • target_include_directories(my_print PRIVATE include)
      • Property: INTERFACE_INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES

  • Example:
    • my_math
