Clean gutters

  • Find a local gutter cleaning company or buy a tall ladder

April

  • Fertilize lawn
  • Lime to raise pH, sulfur to lower pH as appropriate

Investigate cost of drilling a well

Water is super overpriced in the area I live in to the tune of $92-100/month for just 2 people. It's gotta be more economical in the long run to have a well or some sort of brownwater recyling system.

Install invisible dog fence

  • Select and order dog fence SportDOG SDF-100A
  • Determine where to place base power unit
  • Finish laying out perimeter wire
  • Finish mounting base power unit on wall
  • Install perimeter flags
  • Introduce dog to the system according to instructions

Overseed front lawn

  • Buy a bag of lime and spread a week ahead of time
  • Buy a 10-pound bag of turf-type K-31 fescue

Build shelving to organize garage

I've just completed this project over the weekend, but felt it was worth posting here in case someone wants to reference it:

Materials

  • 15 count: 2 x 4 x 8
    • These are standard 2x4s
    • Since my shelves are indoors, I used cheap whitewood 2 x 4s
    • 15 * $2.67 = $40.05
  • 2 count: 4 ft. x 8 ft. 4-Ply Plywood
    • These should be ripped up the middle to form four 8 ft. x 2 ft. sections of plywood. Only three sections are used for shelves, but you can optionally use the fourth to cover the ground.
    • 2 * $17.00 = $34.00
  • ~100 count: 3 in. self-drilling wood screws
    • 2 boxes (70 count) * $7.80/box = $15.60
  • Total cost: $89.65 before tax

Tools

  • Circular saw
  • Level
  • Carpenter's pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Square
  • Electric drill
  • Phillips head drill bit

Build Instructions

My goal was to build a free-standing structure that could be moved around the garage as needed.

Here's the end-result of the build with measurements so you know what you're working towards:

frame

I found that the easiest thing to do was to pre-cut all the 24 in. cross-beam supports ahead of time, and lay them out on the ground to ensure proper fit and spacing.

One thing I found that made assembly with the screws much easier was to start the screws in the long board just a bit, drilling straight towards the ground and then turn the long board sideways to start attaching the smaller cross-beam supports.

Gotchas

  • The overall width of the shelves came to around 29 inches when assembled this way, so make sure and factor that into your target location for the shelves.
  • To fully cover the 8 ft. 2 x 4s, the plywood width should really be closer to 28 inches wide, but it was cheaper to only have to buy two of the 4 x 8 sections of plywood and have them each be 24 inches wide. There's not a structural issue regarding weight with this choice, as there are 5 cross-beams supporting each section of plywood shelving, but it's about 95% aesthetically pleasing.

Replace diseased otto luyken laurel plants

Several plants in the front yard picked up shot hole disease and need to be replaced.

  • Dig up and trash diseased plants
  • Pick a species of loropetalum plants to use as replacements
  • Get potting soil and initial fertilizers for new plants
  • Confirm when the best time to plant is
