the man output source:

look like:

but in https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi there are normal text

The pause() function forces a process to pause until a signal is received
     from either the kill(2) function or an interval timer.  (See
     setitimer(2).)

Filter the input of lookup names or parametrize them.

This is to prevent escaping from the man argument into the shell.
