everythingtoolbar's Introduction

EverythingToolbar

Instant file search integration for the Windows taskbar powered by Everything.

Features

Light & Dark

EverythingToolbar seemlessly blends into Windows 10 and 11 and adjusts according to your theme settings.

Custom search filters

EverythingToolbar reads custom filters previously defined in Everything. To enable this feature, check the Use Everything filters option in the EverythingToolbar settings. From now on, all filters will be available from the filter dropdown:

Custom search filters

Quick toggles for search options

Quick access to search flags (match case, whole word, match path and reg-ex) allows you to find your files precisely.

Quick toggles

RegEx-powered file associations

Create custom Open with commands by selecting Rules... in the preferences. By checking the Automatically apply rules based on condition checkbox, matching files/folders will execute the appropriate command based on the type and regular expression field. Leaving the regular expression field empty will never match, but the entry will only be displayed in the Open with context menu of the search results.

Rules window

Compatibility

EverythingToolbar is compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11 and works well with tools like ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack to give you the full deskband integration even on Windows 11.

Windows 10 screenshot

Other features:

  • Open EverythingToolbar at any time via a customizable shortcut
  • Redirect Start menu search to EverythingToolbar (experimental)
  • Drag and drop files to where you need them most
  • Quickly preview files thanks to QuickLook/Seer integration
  • Use custom Everything instance names

Installation

  • Make sure you are running Windows 10 or 11 and Everything ≥ 1.4.1 is installed and running (the Lite version is not supported)
  • Install EverythingToolbar using one of the following methods
  • Note: For Everything 1.5a the instance name 1.5a must be set in the EverythingToolbar settings (screenshot).

Setup

Search icon

Recommended for unmodified Windows 11 installations

  • After installation on Windows 11 the setup assistant will guide you through the setup process

If the setup assistant did not start automatically, search for EverythingToolbar in the Windows Start menu.

If you want to use the search icon on Windows 10 (not recommended), search for EverythingToolbar.Launcher.exe, start it manually and follow the setup process.

Deskband

Recommended for Windows 10 or in combination with ExplorerPatcher/StartAllBack

  • After installation on Windows 10, activate EverythingToolbar from the taskbar context menu

You will need to open the context menu twice, as EverythingToolbar will not appear the first time.

Windows 11 only: After installation, the search icon setup assistant will start automatically. If you want to use the deskband instead (only recommended in combination with ExplorerPatcher/StartAllback), close the assistant and end EverythingToolbar's background process via the taskbar tray icon.

  • Adjust size and position after unlocking the taskbar (Demonstration video)

Build

  • Open the solution in Visual Studio with .NET Framework 4.7 support
  • Disable signing in project properties
  • Deskband:
    • Build project EverythingToolbar.Deskband (Windows Explorer will be restarted)
    • Install the toolbar deskband by running /tools/install_deskband.cmd as admin
  • Search icon:
    • Set EverythingToolbar.Launcher as startup project and start debugging

Contribute

All kinds of contributions (questions, bug reports, pull requests) are welcome! Helping with open issues is greatly appreciated. As a basic rule, before filing issues, feature requests or anything else, take a look at the issues and check if they have already been reported by another user. If so, engage in the already existing discussion.

You can also help by translating EverythingToolbar.

everythingtoolbar's Issues

Everything search icon appears in systray, no input field

Hi, I just installed Everything Toolbar. Ran Install.cmd as administrator, selected Everything Toolbar in Taskbar properties. Had to restart Explorer.exe. Everything Toolbar Icon appears in systray but no input field. When I type, the result window appears, so it´s running. I´m on Windows 10 x64 version 20H2. Tried to uninstall and reinstall but same result. Any ideas?

Changing keyboard shortcut

I just downloaded the toolbar, but I can't seem to find the option to change the keybord shortcut. I saw that someone had mentioned this before, but I can't figure it out.

Keyboard shortcut/macro?

Hi! I've been using Everything for years now, but I've just found out about this project. Love it so far! I have a question though: is it possible to use/call it through a keyboard shortcut? I've always mapped Everything to a function key, and I'm wondering if I could do the same but using this toolbar instead (so I don't have to close Everything's window afterwards).

"Deskband host for wpf" shows instead of toolbar

Looks like same behavior as described in issue #3.

Uninstalling working v0.4.0, restarting explorer, installing v0.5.0 and restarting explorer again registers the toolbar correctly - toolbar is available for selection - but once selected, appears as "Deskband host for wpf" window on the taskbar.

Reverting back to v0.4.0 results in a working toolbar.

Multimonitor

I dont know if this is possible but I have 2 monitors and the Toolbar is only visible on the first one. Could be a Windows limitation?

Can't enable toolbar with version 0.6

0.6 only shows Deskband overlaying the left most symbol on the taskbar
and the Everything toolbar is shown as not enabled whatever I try.
No log file is generated and no user.config found at all.
All was fine with previous version

Relocating the search icon on the taskbar?

Hey there,
I was wondering if there is an easy way to move the position of the search icon on the taskbar? It is over to the right side, which I already have a fair amount of things setup. I tried to see if there was an option to have it appear elsewhere just from the settings but didn't see one, I also tried just unlocking the taskbar and seeing if I could drag it, but no luck there. Is this something that can be done in a customized theme or similar?

You can see it here in the middle, it took me a bit to notice it even appeared on the taskbar when I enabled it, and I really don't want to have to go and change my RainMeter theme, I just would prefer to have the search on the left side of the taskbar.

Thanks,
-MH

[bug] Toolbar not showing

This is what is told when launching the install.cmd file.
Installation seems to be fine tho as "Everything Toolbar" is available in right click menu.

Enabling the toolbar does nothing except opening "ghost windows" :

I have version 2004 of Windows, .NET framework version seems to be superior to 4.8

Support auto-hiding taskbar

With taskbar hiding enabled, clicking somewhere on the taskbar keep it from hiding. This is normal behaviour.

But clicking inside searchbox doesn't trigger this behaviour and taskbar hides while typing (if cursor is moved away).

Clicking on the taskbar to hold it then clicking inside the searchbox also release the taskbar.

Suggestion to add search history function

I often need to modify the last search to get other or more results.
Currently I have to re-enter the whole search string.
Ctrl-down in the toolbar search box should allow to select from the history of type searches
and allows to modify it.

Make it close with Win key

Request: While Everything Toolbar results are open, make it close automatically when Win key is pressed and the Start menu opens. Currently I have to press Esc first then Win key.

Far more compact view

Two things I would like about this toolbar in the future:

  1. A hotkey to directly focus inside its text box
  2. A more compact results view like Everything has, not this list with huge icons and fonts - as small spacing as its own context menu

Display Problem

Hi Developer,

Now I install Everything Toolbar, but when I pin it on my taskbar, I can't see the whole toolbar and don't know what went wrong, so I ask for your help. Thank you!

Customizable hotkey

Could it binds a shortcut key to activate?
The hotkey can be changed as a setting.

Thanks.

Everything toolbar not integrating with taskbar search feature

I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or if this is a bug, but I have tried installing the Everything toolbar, but the Everything toolbar is not integrating with the Windows toolbar's built-in search box as is demonstrated on this repo's main page. Instead, when enabled, the Everything Toolbar is creating a separate icon on the other side of the toolbar, and, when clicked, does not display anything until the user starts typing. See below.

every

Issue with display scaling

When I do a new install of EverythingToolbar, the scaling of the app works fine. However, after a reboot, the scaling is off (see screenshot, other windows and taskbar for scale).

Set up:

  • External monitor at 100% display scaling (3440x1440 resolution)
  • DISABLED! Laptop monitor at 175% display scaling (3840 x 2160)
  • Windows 10 20H2 (build 19042)
  • EverythingToolbar 0.6.0 beta1 (but it occurred in previous releases as well)

Edit: forgot to mention EverythingToolbar version

Touchpad scrolling not working on some devices

Dunno if it's just me, but touchpad scrolling seems to no longer work in the list, either (Windows Precision Touchpad).

Originally, I opened this issue just for this:

Latest version 0.4.0, Win10 v1709. Search results can appear twice (not sure if all do). I've confirmed that they do not appear twice in regular Everything. See attached screenshot.

but the screenshot I tried to take disappeared, and then the same search term showed only single results, so I couldn't replicate it.

Color customization

Title says it all, i'm using TranslucentTB to have a transparent taskbar, sadly EverythingToolbar stands out because it's not transparent.

Search for separate words

In Everything App there is an option to search for several different words, "AND> OR" mode, for example: if I want to search for a phrase that is "I like to drive at night" if I search only for "Drive Night" the results of the complete phrase will come out , I don't know if I explain myself, In the Everything App you can search for different words.

icon on taskbar with no text field.

Not sure what could have gone wrong here. I tried to use the prebuilt and built it myself, same result. magnifying glass with no text field on the far right by systray.

win10 20H2

[Feature Request]: custom tab like: word, excel, pdf, zip files

For daily office use, a tab like word, excel, pdf, zip files etc. is convenient. This allow us to filter file in simple.

And another question, how to print docx and xlsx files with "open with", what should I set to the Rules.

I tried this

Name | Type | Regular Expression | Command
Print | File | .*(docx|doc|xls|xlsx) | Get-Content -Path %file% | Out-Printer

Get-Content -Path %file% | Out-Printer
command is using Powershell,
but has no effect.

the shorcut_key will be failed.

my system: win10 1809_64
when I type "win+alt+s, tab, tab", and then the the shorcut_key will be failed. it can't work anymore.

Option to auto-resize the search popup

Request to auto resize the popup search window to the size of the results. If few, window is small to match, if many, fills the screen as large as necessary.

Currently the window only remembers the previous state.

Limit popup size to screen resolution

Installed 0.6 stable on Windows 10 Enterprise 1803. It shows behind the Taskbar:
image
https://i.imgur.com/MwPQeTs.png

I am running Open Shell for the Start menu, StartIsBack++ for skinning the taskbar and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. Not sure if any of those change anything for the taskbar but anyway the taskbar is set to be always on top. 😊 But I disabled and Exited all but still, the Everything Toolbar search box appears behind the taskbar.

I am also running two other toolbars, could those be causing this?
image

Also, even though pressing Enter now launches the first item from the top, the item is not selected by default, so if I want to launch the 2nd item from the top, I have to press Down arrow key twice. Can this be changed so I only have to press it once, Enter to launch 2nd item? 😊

Open Path follows Everything configuration

If it would possible to follow the Everything config on "Open Path" – Ctrl+Enter opens a path in Total Commander (in my config). I use this command more often than Run (Enter) and I don't use MS file Explorer. Thanks.

Hide results when the search is empty

Just tried Everything Toolbar 0.6.0.0 and it is great. It is evolving very nicely. I would like to say thanks for the 3 features I requested which are implemented and work beautifully:

  • Custom hotkey to invoke it works brilliantly
  • Compact View with Details is superb
  • Pressing Win key closes it too (since Win key is very close to my hotkey: Ctrl+Shift+E).

I have 1 more feature request and 1 minor change request:

  • Everything comes with an option "Hide results when the search is empty" that opens a clean window and only shows results when a search is done. Would it be possible to have this for the toolbar?

The change request is actually very minor: make the same hotkey close the toolbar again which opens it (kind of like how Win key opens and closes the Start menu).

Thank you very much for an awesome tool. This speeds up workflow when finding anything quickly.

Have I made a mistake?

I have set the path in the "Rules" to Total Commander and saved it. Opening a search term via Total Commander will work (via: Context/OpenWith/TotalCommander Left) - but only until the next system start. Then you first have to enter and leave the "Rules" again (Save or Cancel doesn't matter), and then it works again. Until the next system start...

Hi, great addon (if it works)!

My search gives no results, white and empty popup! Only filters on top available.

Search Everything 1.4.1.992 Lite x64 (running as system service, works perfect)

Some feature requests: Custom colors for background of the toolbar. Resizing of the result popup.

Error on install

Hello,

So I am trying to install but comes back with this error.

RegAsm : error RA0000 : Unable to locate input assembly '%~dp0EverythingToolbar.dll' or one of its dependencies.

I just run install.cmd as admin and it closes without showing me anything so I paste manually in cmd to see what is happening and this is what it writes.

Any ideea?

Thanks
