Serve Bootstrap to aid in rapid design using Haml, Sass and Compass

serve-bootstrap's Introduction

Serve Bootstrap

A simple Serve starting point

This is a simple HTML prototype written in HAML that is designed to be viewed with Serve.

Supports:

What is Serve?

Serve is a rapid prototyping framework for Ruby or Rails-based applications. It is designed to compliment the Rails development setup and enforce a strict separation of concerns between designer and developer. Using Serve with Rails allows the designer to happily work in his own space creating an HTML prototype of the application, while the developer works on the Rails application and copies over the views from the prototype as needed. This allows the designer to focus on presentation and flow while the developer can focus on the implementation.

How do I get started?

Serve is distributed as a gem to make it easy to get up and running. This project uses Bundler for gem management.

If you don't have Bundler installed, run the following at the command prompt:

gem install bundler

Now, to get started with using Serve and this Serve Bootstrap, fork the repo and pull down a copy to your local machine. It makes sense to store this where you store your other codes, for example:

cd Code/path/to/codes
git clone [email protected]:USERNAME/serve-bootstrap.git

From inside the root of your newly cloned repo, run the following at the command prompt:

bundle install

After you've ran bundle install and Serve is installed, as well as the other required gems, you can start it up like this:

serve

This will start Serve on port 4000 and will now be able to view your working prototype in your web browser at this URL: http://localhost:4000

Click around. You will find that Serve enables you to prototype most functionality without writing a single line of backend code.

Helper Rake Tasks

There are a few helper Rake tasks that will aid you in clearing and compiling your Sass/Compass stylesheets. There is also a task to generate a new project at a specified directory so you can keep your copy of the Serve Bootstrap pristine.

rake -T

rake generate # Generate a new project at dir=foo
rake styles:clear # Clear the styles
rake styles:compile # Compile new styles
rake styles:compile:production # Compile new styles for production
rake styles:stats # Run compass stats
rake styles:stats:log # Create a log of compass stats

Rack and Passenger

Astute users may notice that this project is also a simple Rack application. This means that it is easy to deploy it on Passenger or rack it up with the rackup command. For more information about using Serve and Passenger read "Racking Up A Serve Project On Phusion Passenger".
