The Bibliographic Ontology Specification provides main concepts and properties for describing citations and bibliographic references (i.e. quotes, books, articles, etc) on the Semantic Web.

bibliographic-ontology-bibo's Introduction

BIBO at DCMI

The BIBO ontology's maintenance and development has been transfered to the DCMI. All further development or improvement should be discussed with them.

Introduction

The Bibliographic Ontology describe bibliographic things on the semantic Web in RDF. This ontology can be used as a citation ontology, as a document classification ontology, or simply as a way to describe any kind of document in RDF. It has been inspired by many existing document description metadata formats, and can be used as a common ground for converting other bibliographic data sources.

bibliographic-ontology-bibo's Issues

Review Court Reporter class

Hi!

According to me, “A collection of legal cases.” class comment doesn’t match with “Court Reporter” label.

Is this class supposed to be a court reporter as defined by Wikipedia?
Or the label should be “CourtReport”?

I’m not English native, but I don’t understand what definitions of “reporter” and “collection” can match.

http://bibliographic-ontology.org/ is down

http://purl.org/ontology/bibo doesn't resolve anymore as bibliographic-ontology.org seems to be down.

$ curl -iL http://purl.org/ontology/bibo/
HTTP/1.1 302 FOUND
Server: nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)

relax bibo:DocumentPart/dcterms:isPartOf?

I noticed that there is an owl:Restriction on dcterms:isPartOf for bibo:DocumentPart and its subclasses. Namely it asserts that an instance should only be part of exactly one parent. Is this a desired outcome? It seems to me there are lots of cases where a distinct, identifiable document part can be part of more than one document, for instance when a given chapter shows up in two or more editions of the same book with no changes. For digital documents that use transclusions, component content management, etc., a document part could easily be part of many documents.

Would there be negative ramifications to relaxing this constraint?

bibo:abstract

Hi,

some colleagues and I were looking at 'bibo:abstract' and wondered if it is meant to be a separate bibo property or was actually meant to be a reference to 'dcterms:abstract'. That is because 'rdfs:isDefinedBy' points to 'http://purl.org/dc/terms/'.

Thanks,
Jana

delete rdf/xml file

If we're going to serve the ontology from another site, there's no reason to maintain two duplicate source files in the repo. I vote for deleting the rdfxml file, and just using the n3 file to generate it for serving.

Change file extension from .php to .rdf

Currently, I get the following for $ curl -i http://purl.org/ontology/bibo/:

HTTP/1.1 302 FOUND
Server: nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)
Date: Fri, 09 Dec 2016 13:45:02 GMT
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
Content-Length: 211
Connection: keep-alive
Location: http://bibliographic-ontology.org/bibo/bibo.php

The current file extension for the RDF/XML ontology file (.php) is really confusing me and probably others. Could you please change it to .rdf?

Resolve documentation better

I would be nice with human readable specification without protege.

http://purl.org/ontology/bibo/pmid does not resolve to a human readable documentation.

Old documentation exists at https://web.archive.org/web/20100725183526/http://bibotools.googlecode.com/svn/bibo-ontology/trunk/doc/index.html This does not resolve https://web.archive.org/web/20100725183526/http://bibotools.googlecode.com/svn/bibo-ontology/trunk/doc/index.html

http://bibliontology.com/ or http://bibliographic-ontology.org/ has not human readable specification.

The link to https://raw.github.com/structureddynamics/Bibliographic-Ontology-BIBO/ma... at the bottom is wrong.

The link on http://bibliographic-ontology.org/ is also wrong. The file has two extensions.

Nothing seems to be available here https://code.google.com/archive/p/bibotools/source

The links on http://bibliontology.com/changelog.html on this page does not work.
