add better error handling

if the certificate file exists, but is not right for the server, then you get some un-initialised vars errors, rather than information

similarly, a lack of file, or bad url or other errors need to be more informative.

I'm not sure that IO::Socket::SSL can be made to give an informative error in the SSLv3 issue, but we can try :)
