Reformat?

Currently we again see a decline in regular participation and "new flesh" is getting rare again. The last dojo had three participants and the dojos before weren't that much bigger. We did say that we might want to think about increasing our foothold.

I've been talking with a few people at SoCraTes Germany and received some input, together with a few ideas. Listing them without much explanation or emphasis:

  • Start a meetup group
  • allow different formats, not just dojos, but also things like talks, show-and-tell or discussions, based on a topic
  • get "big names" people with talks
  • involve the people (more)

Even shortly before SoCraTes, I did think about opening up to other formats, and starting off by asking (on Mailinglist and Twitter) if there's something people would like.
On the other hand, it may be difficult to find a niche, while competing against the highly fractured developer scene in Vienna, with all the other meetups happening each week. I do suspect, if concentrating on language-agnostic topics, you could score well without "aggressively" taking away people.

Furthermore, how much "Coding Dojo" would this then be to be called "#CodingDojoVie" anymore? And finally, I don't see myself as a full organizer, running after new topics/speakers/advertising/... Doodle and some mailing list mail is the highest of my feelings ;)

Any thoughts?

GDCR21: Slides

Hier Ideen mit Bitte um Rückmeldung.

Überlegungen zu Slides:

  • Gemeinsamer Look and Feel

Konkreter:

@maosmurf @paulroho @ReaSu @codecop

Folien selber gehen dann erfahrungsgemäß schnell - Markdown eben.

Coderetreat 2021-05-15

We have a scheduled Coderetreat (#59) for coming Saturday and there is not yet an event at https://www.softwerkskammer.org/activities/upcoming.

I am happy to create an event but I do not want to interfere if somebody else is already doing that. To be honest, I do not know if there is an "official" procedure.

Unfortunately, I cannot recollect the last CR. Hence if there were any decisions that influence the upcoming one, please let me know.

TODO:

  1. Agree on end time (I believe we discussed the CR could be shorter?)
  2. Copy old trello board (?) and insert link into event description (?) (I have a board called Coderetreat Vienna 2021-01-16)
  3. Create event (see below)

For participation, please register via Softwerkskammer. Entry button is at the bottom of this page. Yes, you need a Softwerkskammer login for this. This is necessary in order to receive a contact via which to tell you the link to join.

If you want to bring your own topic already now, go to <LINK-TO-TRELLO-BOARD>.

This meeting is online, using https://gather.town/. The contact information will be sent to you about 30 minutes prior the start.

Gathering time is 08:45-09:00.

Abendessen

  • Lokal: Meidlinger Schutzhaus
  • Adresse: Schutzhausweg 136, 1120 Wien
  • Telefon: +43 (0)1 813 5108

Was meint ihr: @ReaSu @dertseha

Future of softwerkskammer.org

Dear @ALL,

I guess most of you have received the mail "Nachricht von der Softwerkskammer" (see copy below). I open this issue so we can discuss if/how we, as swkWien, want to react to the therein outlined problems - and maybe more importantly the implications for our activities.

For completeness, the abovementioned mail from the softwerkskammer-maintainers:

Liebe Softwerkskammer-Leute!

Wir beide sehen jetzt also folgende Zukunftsperspektiven:

Free/Community Training

I like to run a community training some day. Opposite to Coding Dojo or Coderetreat it will be hands-on training. My main idea is to encourage people to show up and join, esp, people we have not seen in the practice related events so far. I have several motivations here

  1. test run a customer training (or reuse one after the fact)
  2. meet new people not showing up so far
  3. deepen my own understanding by confronting a group with the topic
  4. spread some more learning

For pt 2 and pt 3 it would need to be an exciting topic, one that I would like to work on myself, otherwise how could I expect someone like me to show up. I have no concrete topic. @swkWien/organiser please share what would interest you. Probably not a beginner topic. (I am bored running introduction to unit testing at every and each new client ;-)

I am undecided if it should be week-day, Friday or Saturday. All three options have advantages and disadvantages. Also open for discussion. I aim for 4-6 hours total content, 4 hours minimum.

And then all the organisational things. Venue? Deposit? Advertising it? Sigh

Topics for in-depth Discussions

Based on the discussion format we leveraged at the May 2017 dojo (SOLID and related principles), the participants of that issue of the Coding Dojo Vienna collected the following topics of interest for further discussions.

The topics are sorted by the number of votes, no particular ordering within each group:

Topic Votes
Maintainability of tests and test refactoring 4
DDD - Domain Driven Design 3
Apply SOLID principles on existing code 2
Legacy code refactoring, modernizing 2
Testing multithreaded code 2
Interface design (REST, GraphQL, SOAP) 2
Software architecture 2
Create an object oriented language 1
Explorer approval testing 1
Mutation testing 1
Difficult to test code 1
Book reviews 1
Explore Property Based Testing 1
TDD as if you meant it (Workshop) 1
Refactoring to patterns (after book) 1
Practicing speed 1
Code reviews - case studies from real projects 1
Object oriented design
Buzz words deep dive
Fool proof design (bug zero)

We discussed several formats (workshops, prepared sessions, discussion rounds) and contexts (ProDev-Meetup?, ...).

We can now use this issue to discuss how to proceed with this experience.

Coderetreat on November 18th (GDCR17)

Just to let you know: The GDCR17 has been announced and immediately Paul/Techtalk have taken sponsorship ;-) It will be run similar like last year. We will look for a guest facilitator.

Survey for session 2017-01

January's session set a new record for participants; The registration of 30 places was filled within two days of publication. I'd like to know what makes these people tick in wanting to participate and I am thinking about creating a survey.

Several factors might have contributed; Known so far:

  • Dojo with a preset theme ("Legacy Code Refactoring")
  • Guest facilitator from Linz (David Tanzer)
  • More advertisement than usual (David's peers; FRQ, the venue's company, made an in-house ad)

This issue is about finding the proper set of questions and then document the collected results.

Moar Coderetreats (Zero Overhead Coderetreats)

As I said in the end of GDCR18 (#40) I would like to attend more Coderetreats. And who would not? ;-) Which means I have to make more of them. Here are my ideas for a format that is maybe more sustainable and which I would like to discuss with you to do so:

Must be minimal to no overhead for us as organizers

  • small group, 6 to 10 ppl max, =
    • 6 to 8 regular/repeating dojo or CR guests, +
    • maybe 2 newcomers (we can deal with them on the fly)
    • I want to limit public access, still be available to newcomers...
    • from my memory I count at least 20 repeating guests that might be interested (including you)
  • no big registration, no big fuzz, maybe a SWK event for registration. only trusted ppl, no money transfers
  • we agree to go to lunch together, either Kantine or restaurant nearby

No facilitator

  • we all know what needs to be done, many of us have run a CR themselves
  • instead of intro
    • inform us about the venue (fire exits etc)
    • see which languages we have around
    • we discuss the goal of the day and chose a topic, e.g. OO or FP
  • after session we discuss in a circle again and choose next constraint for us and according chosen topic

Open Questions

  • frequency: one such CR every 3 months? maybe even every month? sure not everybody will be free each time, still it is about creating opportunities to learn
  • day - still Saturday? I am also available certain days in the week, as are some freelancers.
  • venue - venue is always the problem, but a room for 10 = 5 pairs should be easier to get that 40...

Please let's discuss @dertseha @paulroho @mlem @duffleit @xbojch @goerge

Reorganize sessions folder

We've collected quite a lot of sessions over the years already. With the recent rebranding, I'd like to clean up here as well:

  • Move sessions to year-specific folders. session folder name stays identical. e.g. repo-root/session20001122/* will become repo-root/2000/session20001122/*
  • All sessions that reference the reveal-js at the root will receive their local copy. (Git handles file duplications very well) Remove reveal-js at the root.

This can be done in one go, since each index.html needs to be touched for either operation.

I'm still running around with various lose ends with the rebranding here. I'll take this task afterwards - unless someone else already assigned themselves.

Coderetreat on November 15th AND 16th (GDCR19)

This year GDCR is scheduled for two days because it is 10th anniversary. I plan to have CR on both days. I had discussion with potential guest facilitators and it looks promising that we could have different guests on Friday and Saturday. Which would be awesome.

I need hosting companies and someone helping with the event setup, registration, etc. Who is up to that? As we have two CRs, we can settle for smaller groups, at least on Friday. Further I need 300-500 travel cost for each guest from a sponsor please.

Software Craftsmanship (Mini)Track at Linuxwochen Wien

Beginning of May 2019, Linuxwochen Wien (LWW) will take place.
LWW is a free, community-organized conference and considers itself as an umbrella event for anything related to open source/tech/software in general. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the event takes place from Thursday (2019-05-02) to Saturday (2019-05-04).
In the past, I have collaborated with the organizers on various occations*.

If there is interest, it would undoubtedly be possible to set up a Software Craftsmanship (Mini)Track. Hence there would be a room as well as a time window dedicated to SWK-related topics.
In my experience, talks/events can be a good opportunity to focus on specific topics, work through some content and lay the groundwork for discussions.

@swkWien/organiser and @swkWien/friends what do you think?

*) Linuxwochen Wien have hosted the Austrian Python conference, PyDays Vienna, as an independent event within LWW in 2017, 2018 and will do so again in 2019. I am initiator/chairperson of PyDays Vienna.

Mob-Programming on Open Source Software Meetup

Hi,

I am thinking about starting a Mob-Programming Meetup in the next couple of weeks and I would like to share the idea with you and ask if some of you would be interested in organizing it as a team?
Probably we will also need people who could imagine facilitating a mob during the meetups => if you are not sure if you want to join the orga team but could imagine taking over the facilitator role every once in a while it would be really helpful as well.

One of my ideas is next to practicing mob-programming (which is the main goal), we could work on Open Source Software. Maybe in the end we are able to submit a PR, if not we had a good time practicing Mob-Programming.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas!

P.S. I guess we have to start it as a Remote Meetup, but once we are able to do it on-site again I would prefer that (or alternate).

GDCR20: Program, Facilitators

The program is still being discussed and depends on the format of the retreat.
In particular it depends on the participants, with more newcomers requiring a more prepared program.

#55 listed the following ideas and considerations.

Current options include:

  • Ad hoc code retreat, we develop the program on the fly (works well for small groups, works well for more experienced participants; may not be feasible otherwise)
  • Planned sessions where each session was prepared by a facilitator (requires more preparation but works for larger groups and newcomers as well as experienced participants alike)

Scenario: ad hoc

not much to discuss here

Scenario: planned

There is a facilitator per session, these prepare the goal/objective of the session and eventually provide guidance to the participants.

GDCR21: Catering

Repeating Hangout/Audio Recording Discussion about topics

New year is full of old and new ideas. I would like to try creating a repeating podcast where we discuss some topic of coding, like SOLID or other topics, allowing guests and publishing the recording. @dertseha I hear you are big on audio equipment? @swkWien/organiser how do you like that idea?

GDCR21: Check In and On Site Preparation?

Fragen:

Check In

Der Check In umfasst:

  • Prüfung 2G Nachweis
  • Prüfung Ticket und Refundierung
  • Ausgabe der Zutrittskarte
  • Ausgabe Merchandise, Name Tags

  • Check In Desk
  • Anordnung der Tische
  • Zettel mit WIFI Code
  • Zettel/Poster für Kata
  • Code of Conduct
  • Corona Regelung

Coderetreat on 2016-06-18

@codecop mentioned the idea to have a code retreat on the 18th of June 2016. There are meant to be some international guests in Vienna as well who could (would?) join.

I've checked back with FRQ and it's open to host the retreat. Budget for catering hasn't been fixed as of yet; It might be less than normally known at FRQ.

So, we've got the idea and the location. Two more important factors:

Coderetreat Q2/2017

So we could run another CR in May or June at FRQ? What do you think @dertseha ? Is there still interest to host/sponsor us?

@dertseha said
There's been interest yes, I'll have to check back again.
Though I fear it might be tricky, as the person next in contact for me is under high workload at the moment and possibly foreseeable future.

@dertseha any news on CR location/sponsoring?

@dertseha said
ack, thank you for reminding me - I always forget when at home and remember at work :P
As for hosting a retreat mid-year, yes, willingness is there. The question is mainly: when should it happen? Is there any special slot in May or beginning of June? Is the developers-gang convening in Vienna again?
