Make rancid run normally to capture and config changes into the svn

Change the script to run as a tcl script and then deploy it to the actual router and use a syslog trigger for VPN down to initiate the script rather than running as a cron job.

When the VPN is active but fails a ping for some reason, the config is removed from the router and the IP is written to a file to check next time the script runs. If the VPN config is correct, the next time it will run, it will see the IP hasn't changed and will just fail again and you need to remove the iplog.txt entry and run it again to fix the issue.

Sort through the script and see why this is happening.
