hudsonreview.com's Issues

Add callout to homepage

Could you place the attached logo and the following text on the home page, underneath where the image of the current issue usually is?

Here is the text:
We wish to express our gratitude to the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for the grant to support the publication and promotion of The Hudson Review.

Content Updates

  1. Remove the Gift Subscriptions ad entirely
  2. Shift the "Current Issue" image in its place
  3. In "The Current Issue"'s space (should probably be longer and wider), could you insert a text box that says:

Note from the Editor

I write with the hope that our readers, subscribers and writers are all safe and healthy during this uncertain period. We welcome you to our website offering ample reading pleasure during this time of isolation. We are placing our entire special Spring 2020 British Issue free online.

In view of the mandated office closure, we are deferring our unsolicited poetry submission reading period from April 1 through June 30 to September 1 through November 30. The Hudson Review only accepts poetry submissions by mail.

In order to make this work, you can move or remove the "Books Reviewed" column if you need to. We just want to make sure that readers see our announcement.

Add support button on mobile

I am writing to see if you can put a button that says "Support" next to the "Subscribe" button that you see at the top of the mobile version of our website. It looks like there's room for it. It would take you to the "Support" page where you can donate to The Hudson Review, as you probably guessed.

Multiyear subscriptions

Just got a call from a subscriber who was trying to renew, and she notified me that there is no option currently to purchase a 2 or 3 year subscription. WOuld it be possible to add some sort of drop down menu with these options? The prices are:

2-year: $79
3-year: $111

July 2022 site changes

  • Could you create a "Log In" button next to the "Subscribe" button at the top of the mobile homepage?
  • Could you add a link to our Support page on the mobile homepage's dropdown menu? We would like it to be after MASTHEAD and before CONTACT INFORMATION.
  • Is there a way to add the text below to every issue that is not available for purchase? (Right now it just says "This issue is not available.")
To read this work, purchase the [Season date] issue from The Hudson Review. It is available digitally through institutions participating in JSTOR’s Arts & Sciences V collection at www.jstor.org.

Online Subscription

They would like to migrate their current subscription payment form to one that creates a user account/subscription. The will likely offer the following options:

  • Online Only
  • Print and Online (where they will mail the issue as well)

Currently they offer SOME content for free:
https://hudsonreview.com/issue/winter-2020/

The print version has all the content. They would like to offer a paywalled version of the full content online.

The currently use Paypal as their processor. Will need to make sure their version supports subscriptions, and may be worthwhile exploring moving them over to Stripe.

They are looking for a ballpark quote they can use for a grant they are applying for.

Complimentary Digital Subscription

Paula would like a way to give out complimentary digital-only subscriptions. It could be as simple as adding a new title to the Existing Subscriber link you've sent me, but I know she would like these signups to be lifetime subscriptions, so they wouldn't get any notices for renewal.

Ad on homepage

I wanted to advertise our holiday subscription sale on our home page. Is there any way to have a space on the home page where we post ads? I've attached a screenshot of where I thought it might look good. It could also be where "The Current Issue" preview is, and we could move it below the ad. I'm not sure where the ad would show up on the mobile version.

I've also attached the ad itself. It would link to this page: https://hudsonreview.com/holiday-offer.

Quote work for Eileen

--Redesign/ update of website to match our new cover (font, colors, etc.), and making it easy to change the background color of the homepage every season to match the issue (I imagine this is something I would do manually when uploading a new issue) Adam would plan on rolling out a new theme based on Roots / Tailwind. Existing content would come over as is. The issues data model would remain that same, but the layout could change in a way the data model will support. Bud would build a Hugo / Tailwind version and Adam would apply to the templates. - 12 hours

Items below would likely happen regardless of the redesign

--Make images and videos automatically scale when accessing site on mobile devices - 1 hour

--Creation of an archive very similar to HR Poets Online, "Critics Online." 50 critics' pieces in full, available for free to all visitors. - 4 hours

--Create a "subscribe to digital editions" box on homepage - 1/2 hour

--Create "join our newsletter" form on homepage (we are about to create a weekly newsletter) - 1/2 hour

--Addition of a form onto the Writers in the Schools page, so teachers can apply to participate in the program. - 1/2 hour

--Addition of a news column on the homepage - 1/2 hour

--Removal of Note from the Editor and books column from homepage - 1/2 hour

--Make image of issue cover bigger on homepage - 1/2 hour

Domestic / Foreign Customer Validation

we noticed recently that a foreign address was allowed to pay the domestic rate for a subscription. Is there a way for the site to block domestic rates for any address outside of the US?

Submission Manager Update

Please download the latest version of SubMgr from GitHub. Click the green Code button (upper right) and choose “Download ZIP”.
Follow the Update Instructions at the bottom of the page.

I can assist you with the update, but the FTP credentials that gave me in the past no longer work.
Please let me know if you need any further help. Thanks.

Subscription Data Integration

I've been working with our database designer to integrate the online subscriptions into our existing system. She's written up a memo of updates that will need to be made to include all the information she needs to build the subscription database going forward. As much of this is a little technical and over my head, I was wondering if you would be willing to have a phone call with her so she is able to fully explain what needs to be done. I'm happy to work out a time for all three of us to speak, or just the two of you if that would be more productive.

Gift Subscriptions

We've been noticing that there is no clear way for people to purchase gift subscriptions via the current site. Would it be possible to add another payment page for this? The important distinctions I can think of are:

Clearly indicating and separating the recipient's address from the address of the person paying, including the subscriber's email if possible.

A check box for auto renewal so that the person giving the gift is not charged for a second year if they do not wish to be.

Have it set up so that the auto renewal email notification goes to the gift recipient, who would then need to enter their own credit card information to continue subscribing.

Could there be an email sent to the gift recipient when the order is placed letting them know they have received a gift subscription and providing them a link to register for digital access?

Let me know your thoughts. THe usually only comes up around the holidays, which is why I hadn't considered it much until now.

Deactivate Auto Renewals

Just had a couple questions that have come up over the past week. The main one is about the way we have auto-renewals set up right now. The site's now been live a little over a year so the first people who subscribed are getting billed for renewal, and unfortunately we've already gotten a number of complaints. I expect we'll be getting many more, as the subscribers tend to respond in the same way to things like this. In lieu of getting a flood of angry emails from subscribers is it still possible to turn off the auto-renew function and just have the email reminders to resubscribe? Also are those renewals set up for digital access only, or print and subscription as well? Sorry to drop all this on you last minute, I hadn't expected this sort of response since I thought it was clear enough what people were signing up for.
