after checking the internals of i18n gem, I realized that the fallbacks implementation needs to be changed.

at a minimum we'll need direct SQL access to each localized attribute using the default_locale

need to implement this.

Rails 3.0.10 does not seem to do dirty tracking of serialized attributes...

need to either manually do fix with ActiveModel::Dirty , or file a Rails bug :-/

for more robustness: need to convert 'locale' argument to_sym in:

get_localized_attribute()
set_localized_attribute()

need to make sure to not trigger a save if information didn't change

b = Book.first
title = b.title
b.title = title # assigning what's already there..
b.changed?
=> true # should be false!
b.changed
=> ["i18n"] # ooops!
b.save
=> lock_version and updated_at get modified as a result
