Retool: a better filter tool for Redump and No-Intro DAT files.

retool's Introduction

Retool

Important

Retool is no longer maintained. Read the thread for more information on what this means.

Tip

This is the source repository for Retool. For downloads, installation instructions, and documentation, see the website.

Retool is a filter utility for Redump and No-Intro DAT files. By customizing the DAT files before you load them into a ROM manager, you can more effectively trim, consolidate, and deduplicate your ROM sets.

A screenshot of the main Retool screen

Retool offers the following features:

  • Superior One Game, One ROM (1G1R) functionality compared to other tools.

  • Priority-based region and language filtering.

  • Exclusions of unwanted titles like demos, applications, and more.

  • Custom regular expression filters for including or excluding titles.

  • Local filenames for titles, such as シャイニング●フォースⅡ 『古の封印』 instead of Shining Force II - Inishie no Fuuin.

  • CLI and GUI versions.

You add your DAT files to Retool, and it creates new DAT files with all your preferences, leaving the originals intact. You can then load the new DAT files in a ROM manager like RomVault, CLRMamePro, or IGIR to do your file management — you just don't need to use their 1G1R modes, as Retool has already done the work for you.

Retool is supported on Windows 10+, Ubuntu 20+, and macOS 10+. Non-compiled versions require Python 3.10 or higher.

Contribute to Retool

If you've found something Retool has missed, like a clone or a local name for a title, you can contribute to Retool's clone lists at their dedicated repository.

retool's Issues

Minor typo?

Alternatively, your system might be configured to run the py file directly:
python retool.py -i <input dat/folder>

maybe you wanted to type
retool.py -i <input dat/folder>

Distribution roms

Distribution roms should be filtered that can be found in No-Intro's Nintendo DS and GBA -datfiles.
Basically everything that has "distribution" in the title. My filtered DS set contained 21 of these and GBA had 4.

Nintendo - Nintendo DS (Decrypted) (20210410-081407) (Retool 2021-04-11 14-51-46) (2,262) (-aABcCdemMv).txt
Nintendo - Game Boy Advance (20210410-081751) (Retool 2021-04-11 14-51-28) (1,161) (-aABcCdemMv).txt

These aren't really necessary for anyone except perfectionist Pokemon players.

Retool doesn't seem to have a proper automatic exclusion-setting for these.
If this kind of setting would be added in the future I suggest Add-ons, Expansions or something like that. There might be other roms in other databases that'd meet this same criteria.

NEC - PC Engine - TurboGrafx 16 - 1 game (4 roms) has an unusual Parent/Clone relationship???

R-Type (USA)
R-Type I (Japan)
R-Type II (Japan)
R-Type II (Japan) (v1.1)

https://www.mobygames.com/game/turbo-grafx/r-type

The Japanese PC Engine-version of R-Type was released as two separate games, R-Type I and R-Type II, with the former containing the first four stages and the latter the remaining four. This was presumably done because the whole game would not fit on one HuCard. The second of these cards has nothing do to with the real sequel R-Type II which was never released for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx in any way. For the US TurboGrafx release they managed to fit the whole game on one HuCard so there it was simply called R-Type.

The game was later re-released (again only in Japan) as a PC Engine CD game called R-Type Complete CD which contained all of the stages, a new intro movie and improved music.

Missing Parent/Clone relationships on NEC TurboGrafx CD

Going through the TG CD I found these few issues.

Gate of Thunder (Japan) (FACT, FADT) is included in Gate of Thunder + Bonk's Adventure + Bonk's Revenge (USA)
I understand that the 3 in 1 is clearly a different game and not per se a clone, but in the end one does get the game twice. Here's the moby link: https://www.mobygames.com/game/turbografx-cd/gate-of-thunder-bonks-adventure-bonks-revenge

Excluding "Demos and Samples" doesn't exclude numbered samples

I saw this on the SNES dat.

Rockman X2 (Japan) (Sample 1)
Rockman X2 (Japan) (Sample 2)

Pop 'n Twinbee (Japan) also has 2 samples.
both samples are included in the dat.

In this case these games are also available in other region. Megaman X2 (don't know region) and Pop 'n Twinbee (USA, Europe)

First time trying. Found one Inconsistency on the PSX clonelist

After run the latest psx.dat from redump.org with your tool (using -g switch), I saw that one game on the list was repeated.

1Xtreme (USA), ESPN Street Games (Japan) and ESPN Extreme Games (USA) are the same game.

Looking on the Playstation json I found the inconsistency

"ESPN Street Games" is referenced as a clone to "1Xtreme" but "ESPN Street Games" is referenced as a clone to "ESPN Extreme Games" too

1Xtreme is an updated version to ESPN Extreme Games after they lost the licensing to use ESPN logo/name/etc.

Thanks for this great tool :)

Output DAT only has Disc 1

GBA Parent/Clone mixed with compilations issues

I feel like most of this will be a bug, but perhaps there are also some issues in the clone list. On GBA many of the compilations are in the dat, despite

  1. Games being available outside of the compilation
  2. Having a compilation in "English"

I generated a dat with (-bcdfrs)
Nintendo - Game Boy Advance (1,696) (20201229-143743) [1G1R] (-bcdfrs) (Retool 2021-01-09 11-04-33).txt

For example.
2 Games in 1 - Monsters, Inc. + Finding Nemo (USA) is excluded from the dat because both of those games are available as single titles.
However all other games listed as clones are in the dat, probably because the "english" was excluded.

    "2 Games in 1 - Monsters, Inc. + Finding Nemo": [
        ["2 Games in 1 - Die Monster AG + Findet Nemo", 1],
        ["2 Games in 1 - Monsters & Co. + Alla Ricerca di Nemo", 1],
        ["2 Games in 1 - Monsters en Co. + Finding Nemo", 1],
        ["2 Games in 1 - Monstres & Cie + Le Monde de Nemo", 1],
        ["2 Games in 1 - Monstruos, S.A. + Buscando a Nemo", 1]
    ],

2 Games in 1 - Finding Nemo - The Continuing Adventures + The Incredibles (USA) is not listed in the compilation sections. Also the single title is "Incredibles, The (USA)" if that could also cause issues.

2 Games in 1 - Golden Nugget Casino + Texas Hold 'em Poker (USA) is not listed in the compilation sections either, but is found in the renames section. Result is that the compilation and the single titles are in the dat.

In the end I think the real bug is that clones are not excluded if the compilation is excluded, and they should. The other examples are probably just clone list edits. Finding the issues, however, is difficult because of the noise created by that first bug.

I'm happy to do a pass on all the compilations that still show up after the bug is fixed.

Other filters like rating or players or publisher or kids

This request goes beyond the information in the DAT files and I am not sure if it is the focus of this project.
Nevertheless I would consider the functionality as very useful.

On several GamesDB pages additional information like: ... with tools like Skraper you can create a gamelist.xml from it and work with it in the finished rom set.
It would be nice to have the possibility to access the information (online or from a gamelist.xml) in the ReTool , to have more filters for DAT files.

Games with Sega CD 32X and Mega-CD 32X -tags

Sega CD 32X -tag is prioritized even when setting Europe higher priority:

When using the latest Redump Sega CD & Mega CD datfile with region priorities so that European release is preferred before US, it seems that filtering doesn't quite work as it should be with CD 32X -games

As an example, game Corpse Killer:
The resulting dat will have "Corpse Killer (USA) (Sega CD 32X)"
even though there's an European release available in the same dat, "Corpse Killer (Europe) (Mega-CD 32X)"

Feature Request: Manual Exclusions

I thought it would be a good idea to be able to add a text file (or dat file) of specific games to exclude.

I go through the retool generated dats for CD systems in order to cull games when they're not the "best version of." This is very visible in the early CD era when DOS, 3DO, TG CD, Sega CD, PSX, Sega Saturn might all have the same game. When this happens I try and only keep a game on one system so as to not duplicate it.

If it would be possible to feed this "exclusions" list I generate back on the next run - when dats are updated - that would be super helpful.

Could just be a text file with the exact name and region could work. The only moment that wouldn't is when they change the name of the games, but that doesn't happen too often.

A few errors and suggestions on multiple No-Intro DAT

I'm using latest No-Intro DAT for 8-16 and handheld systems. All is ticked in "Exclusions". All is unticked in "Modes"

[screenshot archived]

I still have few (Beta) games in GBA, N64 and Genesis
I have many (Virtual Console) games left. For example, for NES, "Donkey Kong - Original Edition (USA) (Virtual Console)" shouldn't take place of "Donkey Kong (World) (Rev 1)" with my settings.

Do you think it would be possible to add option in "Exclusions" for (Add-on) (Manual) (SDK Build) and (Enhancement Build) which are not playable roms ?

Thanks for your software, this is very promising !

Better guides for noobs

Hi,
So obviously I'm a complete noob at this but the wiki could use some more verbose instructions.

First, when downloading the .dat file. Which one should I go for? The Standard DAT with default settings or some of the other options? It's never spelled out. I tried the with the standard one and my set and it seems to work.

Second, and this is where I get stuck. Actually making the 1G1R set. I have never used any of the dat managers and tried both clrmamepro and RomVault. Tried reading up on both of them but neither is the pinnacle of user-friendliness or I'm just dumb but could you make a short guide on how to make the set with whatever dat manager you think is the easiest.
Thanks!

Include specific games from an otherwise excluded region

Hi,

In order to save space, I use your great tool to make 1G1R sets, only including a few regions. For example, I don't include Asian regions (Japan, Taiwan, Asia, ...). But there are a handful of games from these regions I'd like to include.

For example, I like the "Ouendan" games from Japan, which are playable even when you don't read japanese. So I tried to include them with custom filters. The thing is, apparently, once the region is filtered out, you can't include games with the custom filters (I tried with global and system filters).

My solution so far is to include the "Japan" region in my region selections, and add "(Japan)" in my global exclude filter, with "Ouendan" in the include filter. This works but is not perfect. For example, this doesn't filter out games with region (Japan, Asia).

Is there a better way to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Best regards
