Are you suggesting to have a dynamic "target" icon based on the pixel lightness/darkness underneath it?
Or fixed, but selectable by user? I like the glow idea, but not sure if it will work in edge cases. Could be an option also.

Yes, that is what my suggestion was about (letting the user select his/her favourite pin among several ones).

I also thought about inverted colored icons. That would be also nice to have such option but I guess it would be more difficult to implement (to develop) this kind of icon. This option has been existing for a long time on Windows, in the Start Menu > Settings > Ease of Access> Mouse Pointer.

But if there was just one icon I would like to see (instead of the target), it would simply be the red pin. I would use it instead of the target.
