I've created a similar setup based on Tasmota. I am using a different sensor, vl53l0x with a laser, and seem to be having challenges with the battery life. 2,000 mAH battery is gone in about 4-5 days. Apparently this is less than a block of salt lasts for ;o).

I've disabled serial port logging and configured static IP. Tasmota's operating cycle looks like follows: wake up -> connect to Wi-Fi -> connect to NTP and MQTT -> measure vl53l0x distance via I2C -> post distance via MQTT -> go deep sleep for 1 hour. If I refer to MQTT broker's logs there is about 6 to 7 seconds between client connect and disconnect events.

Your code seems to be up to the point to accomplish the job. For how long does your battery pack lasts for, please? What's its capacity? And did you have any estimates as to how long does it take for your setup to post measurements?
