theseus-ship's Introduction

Theseus' Ship logo

Theseus' Ship

Theseus' Ship is a robust, fast and versatile, yet easy to use composited window manager for the Wayland and X11 windowing systems on Linux.

Theseus' Ship Plasma Wayland session

Theseus' Ship is intended to be used as part of a KDE Plasma Desktop. Theseus' Ship is a reboot of KDE's KWin. It differentates itself from KWin in that it uses The Compositor Modules.

Installation

Theseus' Ship can be compiled from source. If you do that manually you have to check for your specific distribution how to best get the required dependencies. You can also make use of the FDBuild tool to automate that process as described here.

Usage

Theseus' Ship can be used as a drop-in replacement for KWin inside a KDE Plasma Desktop session. After installation and a system restart the Theseus' Ship binary will execute. All configuration, plugins and shell interaction transfer over.

Development

The CONTRIBUTING.md document contains all information on how to get started with:

  • providing useful debug information,
  • building Theseus' Ship
  • and doing your first code submission to the project.

Need instructions on how to configure, incompatible with kwin6

The readme specifically states:

Theseus' Ship can be used as a drop-in replacement for KWin inside a KDE Plasma Desktop session. After installation and a system restart the Theseus' Ship binary will execute. All configuration, plugins and shell interaction transfer over.

The last part is not true. After an install (which removed kwin) I get back to my session and the zoom is gone. Everything is tiny on my 3000 pixel, 14" laptop.

The display config (monitors kcm) doesn't work, probably incompatible dbus interface (wild guess, that).

Now, I'm fine with me needing to configure stuff in theseus, don't get me wrong, but I need some docs to explain how. Please provide them. In a wiki here is good enough!

Desktop Effects, empty items

Empty items at beginning of list in System Settings / Window Management / Desktop Effects. Expected items appear at end of list. como 0.1.0, theseus-ship 6.0.0. X11. Both built with similar cmake options.

    -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=None
    -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX='/usr'
    -DCMAKE_INSTALL_LIBEXECDIR="lib"
    -DBUILD_TESTING=OFF
    -Wno-dev

Problem goes away when kwin is installed. Returns when theseus-ship + como are reinstalled.

Wayland compositor fails to start on FreeBSD

Affects kwin_wayland but not kwin_x11 under rootful Xwayland. Doesn't affect minico, kwin (kde) 6.0.3 and kwinft 5.27.0.

$ pkg install theseus-ship
$ if [ -z "$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR" ]; then export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp; fi
