It uses album artist if it's not empty else artist. And yes, this is by design otherwise it creates a mess for compilations.

Just as a note, I tried other players and they defaulted to Artist not Album Artist, this made me ditch them in favor or Winyl. This behaviour is great and very welcome so thanks for designing it this way ;) Picard is a great tagger to get this correct fields.
