I don't know. I just copied the Windows files from OJ's blog into this repo since it was spread all over the place. There were only 20 downloads of the Windows PKL files when I last looked - changing keyboard layouts doesn't usually mix in with the Windows crowd. I can only vouch for the Mac files. Are you saying that they're not working correctly?

It appears that Windows PKL files do not change regular Windows layout to Workman when I am holding down Ctrl key. I'm surprised that nobody noticed it before.

I found what the problem is:
Virtual Keys are incorrect and IMHO the Cap can be 0.
I don't see the point of dead keys cause they are incorrect too.

I don't understand what you're saying. Are you saying "Cap" as in Caps Lock? Why should it be zero? What is a virtual key or a dead key?

I added PKL to my Vista VM to see what you're talking about. It looks like the CTRL combos are doing the Colemak layout.

I noticed you forked this repo. Any chance you're already working on a pull request to fix it?

deekayen avatar deekayen commented on June 17, 2024

And to again answer my own question, I pulled your fork into mine. If you think that solves the problem, I'll leave this for you to close until I test it myself.

It's better, but CTRL+ALT is still Colemak from what I just tested.

rambocoder avatar rambocoder commented on June 17, 2024

Is the CTRL+ALT combination even necessary? Is it for the special unicode characters?

deekayen avatar deekayen commented on June 17, 2024

Actually, my testing was in Safari for Windows - it has some CTRL+ALT hotkeys.

Funny that you mentioned unicode characters. I was just reading this morning that the Colemak linux/bsd implementation is done in ISO-8859-15, which should output special characters when doing ALT+letter. The Mac implementation does some sort of special character output, but I haven't tracked down whether it's ISO-8859-1, ISO-8859-15, or something else. What I can see so far looks like the Linux xmodmap files I inherited are probably ISO-8859-15. If I'm reading it correctly, that's what you've put in the Windows PKL files, too. I just want to make sure we're all headed the same direction, that being ISO-8859-15. I don't much care since I never type unicode stuff, but since Workman is a Colemak evolution, ISO-8859-15 probably make sense.

I tested https://github.com/deekayen/workman/blob/master/windows-pkl/workman-p/layout.ini with Safari doing Ctrl+Alt+U and Ctrl+Alt+P and those combos are working.

I'm all for skipping special characters for Windows and making the layout file as simple as http://pkl.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pkl/layouts/dvorak/layout.ini?revision=90&view=markup

I just noticed the difference between Colemak's proposed dead keys and what Apple accepted. Since Microsoft never accepted Workman, it seems Apple is going with an alternate layout than what was originally introduced. See #5

In Safari, CTRL+SHIFT+L correctly shows the reading list. CTRL+ALT+L does not show the Downloads list in Workman PKL. This isn't resolved yet.
