simvastatin-metabolization's Introduction

Simvastatin Metabolization

alt text

Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally.1 It is estimated that over 90% of CVD is preventable through strategies such as healthy eating, regular exercise and alcohol intake reduction.2 A class of lipid-lowering medications called statins have been shown to reduce CVD in individuals who are at high risk โ€” they work by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA that is responsible for producing cholesterol (a type of lipid).3 Genetic differences in simvastatin metabolization have been shown to affect myopathy (muscle damage) risk and are covered in this analysis.4

Where does this Genome App look?

This analysis looks at your genetic information presented at the rs4149056 single-nucleotide polymorphism โ€” located on the SLCO1B1 gene of chromosome 12.5
