Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally.¹ It is estimated that over 90% of CVD is preventable through strategies such as healthy eating, regular exercise and alcohol intake reduction.² A class of lipid-lowering medications called statins have been shown to reduce CVD in individuals who are at high risk — they work by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA that is responsible for producing cholesterol (a type of lipid).³ Genetic differences in simvastatin metabolization have been shown to affect myopathy (muscle damage) risk and are covered in this analysis.⁴
