You can commit more to the twistd approach and give the effective uid/gid of the daemon as parameter. The put up/pull down of the iptables rerouting can be done in the main command part when as root or as daemon init scripts - can't see any easy way of plugging directly into the start/stop application methods inside twistd that still run with root. At the moment though, it requires that the config values do not change from underneath the command interpreter between starting and stopping. Doing the daemonising separately seems more bug-inviting given that twisted is already being used for the net stuff.

Now we're using a different mechanism to hook into the dns resolution process, this is no longer a problem, and it is successfully running as the correct user.
