I think the expected behavior would be to capitalize each word that's passed.

function capitalize(str) {
  function upperCase(str) {
    return str.toUpperCase();
  }
  str.toLowerCase()
    .replace(/\b[\w]/g, upperCase);
}

This is the behavior you get with css text-transform: capitalize.
With css you'll have to specify :first-letter { text-transform: uppercase; }.
So I'd rename this component to upperCaseFirst or something alike to avoid confusion.
