sed.sf.net's Introduction

The sed.sf.net website

Since 2002, http://sed.sf.net is the main portal for sed information and community scripts. Created and maintained by Aurelio Jargas.

Please contribute adding links, fixing broken links and updating information. You can do it by opening an issue ticket or even better, submitting a pull request.

Nerdgasm

The site's main page is a valid sed script file (index.sed) that's converted to HTML by another sed script (index2html.sed). The resulting index.html file, when rendered by the browser, is also a valid sed script.

Instructions

To update the index.html file:

sed -f index2html.sed index.sed > index.html

To update the HTML version of the generator script:

./htmlize.sh index2html.sed

To update the HTML version of some local script:

./htmlize.sh local/scripts/foo.sed

To include a new script in the repository:

  1. Add the text line to index.sed, mentioning the script and the author
  2. Add the script original URL to index2html.sed
  3. Add the original script file to the local/scripts (or local/games) folder
  4. Convert the original script to HTML using htmlize.sh
  5. Update index.html and index2html.sed.html files (see instructions above)

Deploy

The deploy is still an old school manual rsync to the SourceForge's htdocs directory.

rsync --dry-run --verbose --archive --update --compress \
      --exclude .git \
      --exclude .gitignore \
      --exclude README.md \
      . \
      aureliojargas,[email protected]:/home/groups/s/se/sed/htdocs

Remember to remove the --dry-run option to actually upload the files.

sed.sf.net's Issues

remccoms3.sed fails on nested comments

It says:

Remove C and C++ comments, by Brian Hiles ([email protected])

the script works fine but fails over nested commands.

In the sed.sf.net site, when we try to click the link under the :sedlovers heading
by the name of Yao-Jen Chang the link is found to be missing/brokern.

Please fix this broken/missing link.

Dedup scripts from grabbag/scripts and local/scripts

The local/scripts directory contains some scripts that were previously in other places on the web, such as Paolo Bonzini's grabbag website.

In #15 we are adding the grabbag scripts to this repository "officially", so those can be removed from our "local" copy.

Please confirm that the file contents (not just the filenames) are exactly the same before removing the copies.

Trying to get generic sed multi-line pattern match and substitution script to work

Hope you don't mind my posting this here.

There is an issue with the "blockrep.sed" script which is published at linuxtopia under section 4.23.3 . The script has an error which I am not knowledgeable/experienced enough to resolve. Additional details have been outlined here along with what I have done to demonstrate the usage of the generic solution.

Any expertise and guidance which you can bring to bear on the problem would be greatly appreciated. I have had no luck in finding a means of contacting Paolo Bonzini directly.

Restore Seder's grab bag

The original contents from the Seder's grab bag website (by Paolo Bonzini) were lost when Sourceforge set the sed.sf.net project as "unclaimed" (see issue #11).

Unfortunately, Paolo couldn't find a backup for the website files. So what we're doing now to recover that website is getting the copy from the Internet Archive and saving it here in this git repository.

From here, it will be published back to the original URL in Sourceforge: http://sed.sf.net/grabbag

Sections to recover:

Post check:

  • Extract all the local links from the HTML files and check if every linked file is indeed restored.

Non-charset characters are not recognized.

sed doesn't recognize non-charset characters as . (dot), eg with LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8:

# printf "ABCD\n" | sed 's/B.*C//'
Output: AD
# printf "AB\x8eCD\n" | sed 's/B.*C//'
Output: ABCD

I also tried something like [^E]* instead of .* but that also does not work.
I think sed should recognize \x8e is not a C or newline even though it's not in the character set.
With

# printf "AB\x8eCD\n" | LC_CTYPE=C sed 's/B.*C//'
Output: AD

it works but, that's a bit non-intuitive, because normally one wants to have UTF8-charset and sed to function correctly anyway or is there an other regex similar to . that can recognize such characters?
