essays's Issues

Election interference

I was going through the sources in this article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/05/americans-spot-election-meddling-doing-years-vladimir-putin-donald-trump

and I found Dov Levin's work:

http://www.dovhlevin.com/dissertation-and-other-research

He claims the US and the USSR/Russia interfered in 117 elections between '46 and '00. Unfortunately, it's behind a paywall and I can't access it.

Any idea how we can get ahold of his PhD thesis? It and the journal articles are peer-reviewed. This should be gold.

Need an elaboration on why/how.

The end of the first paragraph under the section "History, and Human Nature" under the essay "Crash Course Socialism" is so powerful that it got me to stop reading and finally take an action (opening this ticket). I didn't even finish reading the page yet. FYI/Disclaimer I am male sex/gender.

Private property (and male-dominated societies) came into existence with the growth of large-scale agriculture and animal domestication (A historically male-dominated activity). These tended to be passed on to male descendants (which in turn required strict female sexual control, isolation, and increasing objectification), aggregating into fewer and fewer land-owners, and creating class antagonisms between an owning, and a working class.

If the author meant to say "resulted in" and not "required", then that's it. But otherwise, I would like the author to elaborate on the following things please:

...(which in turn required strict female sexual control,

Why was/is strict female sexual control required for private property to be granted to males? Did you mean to say "resulted in", and not "required"? I just don't see how sex has anything to do with it.

isolation,

If males are already strictly controlling females sexually, why is additional isolation (from whom, anyway?) required? What kind of additional isolation are we talking about here? I get it, the bigger the farm the harder it is to travel, particularly before the proliferation of females operating automobiles. Keep in mind, in modern times, automobile operation skill is not necessarily a result of their sex or gender, so this could extend to before automobiles. Why then, did females comply with the isolation which was required for private property to be traded to male descendants? Trapping a female on your vast endless farm for their entire life to control them sexually is basically rape.

and increasing objectification),

Right, objects don't inherit ownership status, people do. But how did women end up objectified by men if this was required to happen? Why did women put up with being objectified? Is there something I missed when I was a kid?

aggregating into fewer and fewer land-owners,

So each generation is a game of monopoly for its members.

and creating class antagonisms between an owning, and a working class.)

And losers become workers and their descendants have a chance, albeit at a higher difficulty level, of winning the monopoly game. But what does strict female sexual control, isolation and increasing objectification have anything to do with the player's ability to win the game of monopoly?

Facism is a "Heterodox Term"

Seems to fail the "ELI ~ 10" test pretty badly, since I'm 28 who isn't a beginner (though far from an expert) on socialist thought and I've got... absolutely no Earthly clue what the darn diddly you're trying to say with that. I've Googled the word heterodox and the definition of the word didn't help, neither did the Wikipedia page on the word, and Googling "Heterodox Fascism" leads to two top results from what appears to be a reactionary blog whining about social movements on college campuses. If I can't figure out what you are trying to say as someone with at least base level knowledge on the topic at hand, and maybe more importantly existing socialist leanings, even after a few Google searches to figure it out... I doubt that a 101 beginner with no knowledge, an existing aversion to socialist ideas, and no desire to look up the word will figure it out.

I figure you should either define the word or replace it with something easier to understand. I'd suggest something but like I said I myself can't figure out what you mean.

Operation Sea-Spray

I think Operation Sea-Spray belongs on the list. While it didn't cause serious long-term damage, it was a significant breach of medical ethics.

Draft for bullet point:

In 1950, the US Navy sprayed bacteria over the San Fransisco Bay Area during Operation Sea-Spray, one of the largest human experiments in history. The residents of the area were not informed, making the event a serious violation of the Nuremberg Code on medical ethics. In the following month, 11 residents checked in at a local hospital with a rare urinary tract infection, and the area saw a spike in pneumonia cases. This was one of numerous open-air tests of biological agents conducted by the US Armed Forces during the Cold War.

What about Boris Yeltsin?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/05/americans-spot-election-meddling-doing-years-vladimir-putin-donald-trump

http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/27/world/10.2-billion-loan-to-russia-approved.html

I wouldn't go so far as to claim that the US helped get him in during/after the August '91 coup d'etat but they obviously supported him, even giving him a 10.2$ billion loan in the run-up to the '96 election. Which in a way, is kind of worse, right, because at that point everyone knew he was ruining the country and totally unfit to even run a small business...

Suggest merging with my similar repo

I have a repo at https://github.com/mikeizbicki/american-shit that is similar to your us-atrocities.md file. My repo seems to have a few incidents not already in yours. I suggest we merge them together. Since your repo is more popular than mine, I suggest simply adding the material from mine into yours and keeping yours as the main source. I do think your phrasing of 'atrocities' is a bit too strong for some of the things in my repo though. So I suggest that we renaim your file to american-shit.md to be slightly broader in scope.

What do you think?

Probably should weaken language for Australian dissolution case

I read up on the background and while what you said happened definitely happened, it's really hard to find evidence for it being ordered by the US rather than occurring naturally. Even the people who said it did later retracted their statements (obviously under pressure, but still...)

feedback on socialism_faq

Thanks for the info, I have a lot to learn!

IMO, that FP piece does not provide enough to get to the rather eye-catching claim re the reason Japan surrendered. I think you need a source with more than circumstantial evidence for that claim. Strongest argument in there is "why did it take 3 days to convene the surrender council if it was the Hiroshima bomb that did it". A puzzling question one does not know the answer to is not positive evidence.

NED/CIA involvement in Ukraine

The only evidence I've heard so far is from the documentary Putin, Russia and the West by Norma Percy who is highly credible and has an extreme degree of access.
