Getting Started

The DevRel Collective (formerly Evangelist Collective aka We Are Developer Evangelists aka WADE) exists to facilitate sharing information, resources, and encouragement among the professional Developer Advocates, Evangelists, and Technical Community Manager community. If you share a passion for nurturing developer communities, are working as a full-time DevRel professional, and would like to get to know a great group of friendly peers, reach out about joining the collective.

New Members

Welcome! First and foremost, check out our Code of Conduct. The TL;DR:

  • Be respectful
  • Abusive behavior is never tolerated
  • Data published to DevRel Collective is hosted at the discretion of the administrators, and may be removed
  • Violations of this code may result in swift and permanent expulsion from the community

We're here to help

We have a team of awesome people around to keep DevRel Collective running smoothly. If you ever need help or get stuck, use the !mods shortcut and someone will come running! A few more tips to get you started:

  • Say hi in the #welcome channel to meet everyone or hop into a conversation in #general. Feel free to introduce yourself and say hi to those people you may have met elsewhere, and meet those that you haven't yet had the pleasure of getting to know. Don't worry about not being "technical enough" or feel like you have to know everyone to fit in. We're a very welcoming group, and we've got everyone from event managers to CTOs in here, so we're sure you'll find someone to talk to!
  • Find a city room to connect with those folks who are in your local area, or in a city you're traveling to. Post your upcoming events, see who's around, and meet up in person to get to know the community better.
  • If you're on the road as often as the rest of us are, you'll want to join the #on-the-road-again channel. You can figure out who's going to be where when, what the hot conferences are, and when you'll have a chance to meet your new internet best friend IRL.
  • Lastly, make yourself at home! Check out the various channels, ask questions, share ideas, and meet new friends.
  • Suggestions on how to make the group better? Visit us over at #moderators.
  • Know other people that you think might be a good fit for the group? Have them request an invite.

Introduce yourself!

Open a PR on the file introductions.md and add your contact information (as much as you feel comfortable with). This helps everyone get to know each other better!

Big Picture

The purpose of DevRel Collective is to answer the question of "what would you say you do here?"

How to Use This Repo

This is the DevRel Collective's place to store documentation and track ideas we want to pursue. Please open issues or pull requests if you want to participate in either.

How Can I Help?

Aww shucks, thanks for asking! Check out our get involved documentation. It's always nice to see you open an issue or PR saying you'd be game to help and how (documentation, coding, strategy, marketing).

Background

Our collective is an inclusive thought experiment started by Dave Josephsen, Florian Motlik, and Mary Thengvall, and is now supported by a group of volunteers including a Board of Directors and an Admin Team. See our Governance Model for more information.

Name and logo usage

We kindly request that the community name and/or logo of the Devrel Collective not be used without our express written permission. The best way to do this in public is to create a GitHub issue.

getting-started's Issues

Provide an introduction to our governance model

Due to DRC being an offshoot of EvangelistCollective and rolling forward with a crew of contributors, we never quite got to documenting how that part works (to the best of my knowledge).

I'd like us to share:

  • The Benevolent Dictators team concept (explanation and lazy consensus system)
  • The BDFL team (originators who shepherd this forward as ongoing admins)

I believe I filled out the application form on DevRelCollective.fun but I'm not sure and that is why I'm opening this issue.

Rebrand to "DevRel Collective"

@mary-grace and I have been reviewing what we want to accomplish with this group and how it evolves to align to it. Part of that will be in the naming.

Why the shift from Evangelist to Developer Relations?

While “The Evangelist Collective” was a clear and straightforward name for us when we began in Sept 2014, the industry titles and understandings of the term “Developer Evangelism” has shifted over the past few years. Rebranding as “The DevRel Collective” allows us to open our arms to those involved in Developer Evangelism, Developer Advocacy, and Technical Community Management, without alienating those who feel that the term “evangelism” has too many religious ties.

Additionally, with the way that the industry has shifted in the last few years, rebranding as “The DevRel Collective” allows us to reach more people who are actively looking for a professional community that they can connect to.

Actions

  • Changing text in our logo
  • Updating Github organization
  • Update github.io repo (without breaking link to evangelistcollective.github.io)
  • Update info in docs
  • Anywhere in our Slack
  • Pick up a sweet domain name!
  • Redirect the old domain

Temporarily remove Mary's contact info

Given that I'm on sabbatical for the next 6ish months, we need to remove my contact info as the main person in charge (TM). I can do this once I'm back from vacay & conferences on Sept 9 but if anyone wants to tackle it before then, I won't stand in your way!

Reaching out because of auto rejection on slack application form

Hi.

I was recommended to join the DevRel community on slack from an existing member that had reached out to me in the past.

As I detailed in my application, I've done a lot within DevRel, notably:

  • Was a part of the first GitHub Accelerator program with the goal of finding new ways to make open source more sustainable,
  • Am a conference speaker
  • Am a open source maintainer myself of pypandoc, said project that got accepted into the program.

However, the application automatically rejected my submission, because as my professional job, I'm "only" a software engineering intern at Uber, despite having been in the open source developer space for over 13 years, and all else I listed above :)

So as described before the application process, I'm now reaching out to (hopefully) where some admins can see this, as to not make duplicate applications :)

DevRelCollective request is unsecure.

I'm not sure if this is an issue, but I see that the SSL isn't working when I click on the link to get an invite to the slack channel. Is this something to be concerned about?
