So I think I fixed my issue. I didn't know that using:
export IMAGEIO_FREEIMAGE_LIB= 12345
only sets your env variable temporarily. I had to create a .zshrc file using a text editor in my home dir. Just write IMAGEIO_FREEIMAGE_LIB= path/to/set in that document, save it and you are ready to go. Now It works also for VS Code Studio.

So I use Vs Code Studio for coding. However when I launch my script via the default (OS) terminal, after setting the IMAGEIO_FREEIMAGE_LIB variable, everything works just fine. So maybe my terminal in VS Code Studio is not set up correctly?
