Open Source Theremin based on the Arduino Platform

Open.Theremin.V3 is an arduino shield to build the legendary music instrument invented by Leon Theremin back in 1920. The theremin is played with two antennas, one to control the pitch and one for volume. The electronic shield with two ports to connect those antennas comprises two heterodyne oscillators to measure the distance of the hand to the antenna when playing the instrument. The resulting signal is fed into the arduino. After linearization and filtering the arduino generates the instruments sound that is then played through a high quality digital analog audio converter on the board. The characteristics of the sound can be determined by a wave table on the arduino.

opentheremin_v3_shield's Issues

Antenna connector

Hi all,

I live in Germany and have no idea how to find the antenna connectors. How are they called and where could I buy something like that.

Do you guys have any hint?

Wrong component values in BOM file

Hi @GaudiLabs, I have started soldering the components for OpenTheremin V3 (ordered them from Mouser using the BOM file) and I have found two errors so far.

  1. C22 is listed as 47nF in BOM however schematics show 10nF. Checking the RC filter frequency, 10nF seems the right one (Fc=7.2kHz). With 47nF we'd get Fc=1.5kHz which seems way too low.

  2. R18, R19 are listed as 270R in BOM however schematics show 470R. Not a big deal. Provided arduino is able to provide enough current the led will be brighter :-)

Btw, I have also rerouted the PCB for increasing the via drill to 0.5mm and track widths / clearance to 0.35mm. These where requirements for one PCB house I've tried. I have not yet tested if the new PCB works, hopefully I didn't broke anything. I will probably fork and commit it to a new repo.

MCP4922 alternative

Hi. I appreciate your hard works. Thank you so much to share all as open source.
I am trying assamble the pcb by myself. Is there any other component that i can use instead of MCP4922?

PCB Component and Footprint libraries missing

In order to edit the schematic and PCB easily, KiCad needs the GaudiLabsFootprints and the GaudiLabsPartsLibrary.

Would it be possible to add these as GitHub repositories?

Thanks for your good work!
