This has raised some questions about how exactly fines will be stored. Initially, we had said Fine would simply be a column in the Damage table, which is how it stands currently.
However, this does not allow for fines for improper checkout, nor does it allow you to assign a person responsible in the case of a common area RCI.

I propose adding a Fine table, with the following potential columns:

  • FineId
  • FineAmount
  • GordonID (of student responsible for fine)
  • Reason/Description (which could be populated with the Damage description, or with “Improper checkout”)
  • ComponentID which could be null for an improper checkout fine

This idea needs to be hashed out a little more thoroughly, though.

DamageType = "IMPROPER CHECKOUT" ?

nor does it allow you to assign a person responsible in the case of a common area RCI.

Well...we are not actually sure how fines work for Common area rcis.

But now that I think about it, I think we are asking too much of the Damage table. So maybe you are right. I support the motion.

This is perfect timing because I'm currently writing the code for checkout. So instead of creating damage records, I'll be creating fine records.
