hs-bugs's Issues

Lightbomb deals incorrect damage if a 0 attack minion is in play and you have Spell Damage +1

If you play Lightbomb and any 0 attack minions are on the board, Spell Damage +1 bonuses are applied ONLY to them. If there are no 0 attack minions on the board, everything gets the Spell Damage +1 bonus damage, as expected.

http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/18704211721?page=1#19

Also, Lightbomb now deals its damage simultaneous rather than one at a time (with on-damage triggers applied in between), so the Frothing Berserker vs Lightbomb bug should be gone now.

Snake Trap can trigger on a full board

If your board is full, Snake Trap will still trigger when one of your minions is attacked and produce no snakes. This is inconsistent because Noble Sacrifice, Mirror Entity and Spellbender do not trigger if your board is full. However, an argument can be made that this is because Snake Trap has the potential to offer partial value (0 to 3 snakes), while the other secrets are "all or nothing" value.

[Hearthstone Science] various Ogre Brute and Traps interactions

Snake Trap and Duplicate triggering and doing nothing is confirmed to be a bug by Ben Brode:

Erroneous display of skull when attacking with a minion drawn by King's Elekk

Transforming Echoing Ooze causes the "goo" effect to persist

If you play an Echoing Ooze, then transform it the same turn via effects like Tinkmaster Overspark, Polymorph or Recombobulator, the green semi-transparent goo visual effect does not disappear and permanently remains on the Battlefield in the position of the original Echoing Ooze for the remainder of the match. This is purely a visual bug. This bug was introduced in Patch 2.0.0.7234 (GvG patch).

Minions in the Graveyard can be affected by targeted Battlecries, Spells and use their Battlecry

1.) Bane of Doom and Mortal Coil targeting a minion that dies before the spell goes off may or may not trigger the side-effect, seemingly inconsistently.

[Hearthstone Science] Bane of Doom, Mortal Coil and the Graveyard

Technical explanation:

In Hearthstone, Spells and Battlecries targeting a minion still activate and affect that minion if the minion is killed in an earlier Phase, such as by Violet Teacher spawning a token and a friendly Knife Juggler reducing it to 0 Health. Furthermore, when the minion moves to the graveyard, its attributes, such as Health, are reset, and all attached Enchantments are removed.

If Bane of Doom or Mortal Coil are used to target such a minion, they damage the minion after it has been moved to the graveyard. This means their side-effect will go off if they reduce the reset version of the minion to 0 or less Health, regardless of their state prior to dying.

2.) Battlecries that target a minion that is already in the Graveyard will still resolve and have their 'expected effect'. For example, playing a Youthful Brewmaster on Illidan Stormrage, if Illidan Stormrage dies before the Battlecry Phase, will return Illidan Stormrage from the Graveyard to the hand.

[Hearthstone Science] Resurrect Minion no longer in the Graveyard (Death Events vs Graveyard)

The following has been fixed in Patch 7.1.0.17720 (see #58):

If you play a minion and it dies before the Secret Activation Phase, and your opponent has Mirror Entity in play, it will still create a copy of the minion.

Weird Dread Infernal interaction with Explosive Sheep and Mirror Entity|恐怖的煉獄火 vs. 123自爆綿羊&鏡像體

Fallen Hero extra damage bypasses Immune effect

If you have a Fallen Hero in play, a Mal'Ganis to make your Hero Immune and use your Hero Power on yourself, the base damage is prevented but the added damage by Fallen Hero goes through.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/3i500j/bug_with_malganis_and_fallen_hero_when_jaina_hero/

http://tieba.baidu.com/p/4104346870

It also works with Ragnaros's Hero Power:

http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/18710644804

However: Fallen Hero and Ice Block Immune works correctly.

http://tieba.baidu.com/p/4104073562

Additional notes:

Spell Damage +1 and Immune works correctly.

It is unknown if Fallen Hero and Immune Minions has the same bug. It is unknown if Fallen Hero and Divine Shield minions has the same bug, but it is likely correct (as this is a very common situation in this Tavern Brawl).

Back button becomes unresponsive

After you finish drafting your Arena deck, the back button becomes unresponsive. Workaround: Esc -> Options -> Credits -> Exit credits.

Hero attack value multiplied during death animation

If Sacrificial Pact is used on Jaraxxus, his attack value visually changes from 3 to 9 and then 24 for a brief moment before he dies. If his attack is X, it changes to X3 then to X8 (tested with Spiteful Smith and Truesilver Champion).

The bug can be reproduced by playing Bite or Heroic Strike and then dying:

or by equipping a weapon and then attacking into an enemy Zombie Chow:

The interaction seems to be because, whenever Hearthstone updates attacks, the Hero/Minion being in play resets the attack to base value, then every Weapon, Enchantment and Aura affecting the Hero/Minion changes the Attack value. But if the Hero is not in play while the Enchantments affecting it are, Hearthstone erroneously does not reset attack to base value before then applying Enchantment effects. Hearthstone updates Attack many times while it is ending the game, leading to the Attack values climbing indefinitely.

Holy Wrath ignores spell damage if the drawn card is 0-cost

When casting Holy Wrath and the drawn card has a casting cost of 0 (such as the Wisp or Target Dummy), the damage done by the spell remains at 0 even if the player has Spell Damage. Using Holy Wrath on a minion with Divine Shield in this situation will not break Divine Shield.

This bug is similar to 2 bugs that has already been fixed, namely using Shield Slam with 0 Armor and using Shadowflame on a 0-attack minion while having Spell Damage used to deal 0 damage incorrectly.

Cards using the TOPDECK tag obtained by spells can be seen by opponent in history sidebar

If a card generates Flame Leviathan, the opponent can see this card being obtained in the history sidebar on mouseover. This bug happens because the TOPDECK tag makes the card in hand revealed for the opposing player as well.

This issue is not specific to Flame Leviathan, it also happens with Sea Reaver, Ambush!, Ancient Curse and Burrowing Mine:

http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/18719276402
https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/4g9ddj/thoughtsteal_ambush_bug/

Player who played Thoughtsteal:

Opponent:

All-Character AoE damage ignores 0 Health minions, All-Minion AoE damage hits them

AoE damage that hits all Characters, such as Abomination, Flame Leviathan and Explosive Trap, does not hit minions that have already been reduced to 0 or less Health ('mortally wounded').

However, AoE damage that hits all Minions, such as Explosive Sheep, hits minions that have been reduced to 0 or less Health, and continues to trigger on-damage triggers.

It is not clear which is the intended behaviour and which is the bug.

[Hearthstone Science] Does AoE Damage Overkill Minions?

Note that as of Patch 3.0, this behaviour may have been standardized to always hitting 0 Health minions:

If you have 2x abom, a 1/5 acolyte and a soulpriest on the board and you play circle of healing, it used to be that you would only draw 2 cards. They recently changed that and you draw 3 now. I don't know if you guys know this already.
I tested it today, i don't know since when it's like that
Last patch maybe

Note that The Grand Tournament adds Spawn of Shadows, which deals damage to both Heroes and can be triggered multiple times in the Inspire Phase, so it should be tested whether this overkills Heroes that are already at 0 Health or ignores them.

It seems that in Patch 3.0, this has been resolved as 'all AoE damage overkills Characters'.

Playing resurrect without having lost a minion can copy an opponent's dead minion

If Player 1 has no dead minions since the start of the game and Player 2 does, if Player 2 plays Resurrect (this one will function correctly), any subsequent Resurrects played by Player 1 while his dead minions list remains empty will instead resurrect a minion from Player 2's list of dead minions.

Attacking into Explosive Trap with Gladiator's Longbow prevents the Hero damage 50% of the time (Dominant Player Bug)

UPDATE:

Patch 5.0 'fixed' the Gladiator's Longbow vs Explosive Trap interaction by making Gladiator's Longbow a Proposed Attack Event trigger that renders your Hero Immune. Unfortunately, Explosive Trap is also a Proposed Attack Event trigger, meaning the Dominant Player Bug determines which trigger goes first. If Explosive Trap triggers first, the Hunter will take damage.

Learn more about the Dominant Player Bug here: http://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/Advanced_rulebook#Dominant_Player_Bug

Previous post:

You will take damage if you attack with a Gladiator's Longbow into an Explosive Trap. Ben Brode tweeted on 21 June 2014 that this is likely a bug:

Q: Gladiator's Longbow. Even though the immune shimmer appears over the hero, they are still damaged by Explosive Trap.
A: it's a bug. We're looking into it.
Q: What one is the bug? That we're damaged by Explosive Trap or that the immune shimmer appears?
A: probably the fact that you're damaged
Q: Been debating on Hearthpwn. Some folks figure damage shouldn't occur. Some think it should and shimmer is the bug. Clears it up.
A: I think the text makes you feel like you shouldn't take damage even if there were no effect.

This is in contrast with attacking into a Paladin with an Eye for an Eye secret, where the Hunter will not take any damage from the secret.

Screenshots:

If a Hunter attacks a Water Elemental with the bow, it will take no damage from the Water Elemental as expected. Since the Water Elemental did not do any damage, it will also not Freeze the Hunter.

Minions in the Hand can be affected by targetted Battlecries, Spells and Mirror Entity and use their Battlecries

Using Illidan Stormrage triggering a Knife Juggler killing an enemy Explosive Sheep killing an Anub'ar Ambusher, the target of a Battlecry, source of a Battlecry, target of a Spell or target of Mirror Entity can be returned to the Hand before the respective Phase said effect would have resolved in, and it will still resolve. This allows you to do things like damage a minion in your hand, transform a minion in your hand and so on.

Technical details:

When a minion leaves the Play zone, all attached Enchantments are removed and the minion is reset to a default state, except for 'pending destroy'/TO_BE_DESTROYED. (In addition, if it died and went to the Graveyard Zone, 'pending destroy'/TO_BE_DESTROYED is also unset.)

When a minion leaves the Hand zone, all attached mana-related Enchantments are removed and the minion is reset to a default state, except for 'pending destroy'/TO_BE_DESTROYED. (This allows for Bolvar Fordragon to work and causes the Vaporize/Freezing Trap bug.)

[Hearthstone Science] Wrong Zone Battlecries and Spells #1

[Hearthstone Science] Make a Twilight Drake 4/20 with its Battlecry

There is also at least one client side hang - if you transform a minion in your own hand, your opponent's client will hang, and they must reconnect to continue playing. (This is shown in Wrong Zone Battlecries and Spells # 1)

Triggers are not queued based on order of play (aka "Dominant Player bug")

When a game of Hearthstone starts, one player has PLAYER_ID 1, and the other has 2. This is unrelated to who goes first/who gets the coin.

When triggers from both players trigger simultaneously, they are queued not in strict order of play, but for the dominant player (PLAYER_ID = 1) first, then the second player's. Each player's triggers are queued in minion age order. When events (such as deaths/damage/healing) are queued simultaneously, they are resolved in global order of play as expected. The bug only affects triggers. This bug notably does not affect Deathrattle triggers, because Deathrattles are triggered within each death event which are already in the correct minion age order.

For Murloc Tidecaller:

For end-of-turn triggers:

For on-death triggers:

For combat preparation triggers:

For playing a spell triggers:

It also exists for on-damage triggers and probably every kind of trigger in Hearthstone.

Common scenarios where the Dominant Player affects competitive gameplay:

  1. Shadow Madness vs Power Overwhelming - if the Secondary Player casts SM+PO, the minion does not die after being returned, therefore Dominant Player gets to use the Power Overwhelming Enchanted minion for one turn. If the Dominant Player does it, the minion dies after being returned. See #62

  2. Ragnaros/Baron Geddon vs Kel'Thuzad - if the Dominant Player owns Kel'Thuzad, the revived minions will be valid targets for Ragnaros and Baron Geddon. Otherwise they will not.

  3. Dart Trap vs Inspire - If the Dominant Player owns Dart Trap, it will fire before Inspire minions return to the hand, summon more minions, etc. If the Secondary Player owns Dart Trap, it will fire after.

Steamwheedle Sniper inconsistency - can target your own Hero

Contrary to the card text of Steamwheedle Sniper, you can target your own hero with your Hunter Hero Power. It might vary depending on whether your hero is Rexxar or Alleria or whether you upgraded your hero power with Justicar Trueheart.

This happens because the hero powers have differend IDs for each hero, same for upgrading the hero power with Justicar Trueheart. Below is the list of outcomes for every hunter hero power with screenshots.

Rexxar's Steady Shot (DS1h_292) - can't target your hero
Rexxar's Ballista Shot (AT_132_HUNTER) - can target your hero
Alleria's Steady Shot (DS1h_292_H1) - can target your hero

Feign Death triggers a minion's on-death triggers as well as its Deathrattles

If you cast Feign Death and have on the field a friendly minion with both a Deathrattle and an on-Death Triggered effect, the on-death triggered effect will go off once for its own 'feigned death'. It will not go off for other minions with Deathrattles. To do this, you have to play a minion such as Scavenging Hyena or Flesheating Ghoul and add a Deathrattle such as Ancestral Spirit or the Brawl effect of The Masked Ball. This is a bug because Feign Death is meant to only trigger Deathrattles, not on-death Triggers, and does not, for example, count as a death to Kel'Thuzad either.

[Hearthstone Science] Feign Death vs Added Deathrattles Bug

However, this bug does not happen with Princess Huhuran Cult Master.

Presummon Triggers (Murloc Tidecaller/Cobalt Guardian vs Mirror Entity)

When a Murloc Tidecaller is copied by the effect of Mirror Entity, even though a Murloc Tidecaller is being summoned, the original Murloc Tidecaller does not trigger at all.

(Before unknown patch between 5.0-7.0):

When a Cobalt Guardian or Murloc Tidecaller is copied by the effect of Mirror Entity, the on-summon trigger goes off before the copy even begins, and when the copy happens, it copies the post-trigger state rather than the pre-trigger state. Despite using the wording 'whenever you summon' like Summon Resolution Step triggers, their timing is totally different.

For example, if you play Murloc Tidecaller into Mirror Entity, the played Tidecaller will buff in response to the copied Tidecaller, then the copied Tidecaller enters play as a 2/2 as well.

(In previous patches, these minions also triggered on Transforms. But this has since been fixed.)

Misdirection into Noble Sacrifice causes game to hang

Noble Sacrifice causes the game server to stop responding if it is triggered at the same time as Misdirection. Noble Sacrifice must be played first then Misdirection so that they trigger in that exact order. The reverse order is not bugged.

Created cards will have their creator info incorrectly displayed if the entity was removed from the game before you reconnected or started spectating

If you spectate someone, or reconnect to a game, after a 'created by' card's creator has left play, sometimes the displayed information will be incorrect, looking like a line from power.log instead of naming the creating Entity.

Commanding Shout is not applied to transformed or stolen minions

Commanding Shout states that your minions can't be reduced below 1 Health this turn. However, it is not applied in several cases:

If you steal a minion, it does not gain the Commanding Shout enchantment.

If one of your minions is Transformed with a spell transformer, the post-transformed minion does not have the enchantment.

If you play Grim Patron, Commanding Shout and Bouncing Blade, it should result in a board full of 3/1 Patrons for the player. However, this is not the case.

Below are the examples where Commanding Shout works correctly:
If one of your minions gets stolen by Sylvanas Windrunner' Deathrattle, it will keep the enchantment until the end of your turn.

If one of your minions is Transformed with a minion transformer, the post-transformed minion will receive the enchantment.

If you play a self-transformer like a Druid of the Claw, the final minion will also receive the enchantment.

AI targets own minions with damage/destroy/silence effects

Rend Blackhand's AI has been noted to use Blackwing Corruptor's Battlecry on its own minions.

General Drakkisath's AI has been noted to use Drakkisath's Command on its own Kidnapper.

AI Rogue backstabs own minion:

Board state:

  • Player
    • Grim Patron, 2 health
    • Grim Patron, 2 health
    • Acolyte of Pain, 3 health
  • Innkeeper (Normal deck, rogue)
    • Empty board

AI plays the following:

  • Nightblade
  • Backstab on OWN Nightblade
  • Sap on Acolyte of Pain

AI casts Rampage on player's minion:

AI casts Shadow Word: Death on its own minion:

Direct weapon destruction is always instantaneous instead of being queued

When Sabotage is used to destroy an enemy weapon and a minion, if both of them have Deathrattles, the weapon's Deathrattle always runs and resolves first, followed by the minion's, regardless of the play order of the weapon/minion. In the more general case, the weapon is destroyed first, before the minion is destroyed - this allows the minion's abilities to still trigger from the weapon's Deathrattle.

It is currently not clear if Sabotage destroying the weapon first is intended behavior, since the general expected behavior is that both weapon and minion should be destroyed at the same time, with their deaths processed in order of age. Ben Brode had said that "Things happen one after the other, but the one thing that never happens during a card resolution or trigger is minions dying." (see Reddit thread below) but did not explicitly mention weapons dying, only minions. From the interactions of Death's Bite attacking into a Harvest Golem, their Deathrattles will run in order of play, suggesting that weapon and minion deaths both follow the same general rules for death. From this, we can infer that the a sabotaged Death's Bite should not have triggered its Deathrattle before the death of the sabotaged minion.

Deathlord-played minion dying instantly causes board-covering graphical glitch

If a sequence of events causes a Deathlord to die, and its Deathrattle brings into play a low health minion (let's call this Minion X) that dies immediately to another Deathrattle (usually Explosive Sheep, Abomination or Unstable Ghoul), Minion X's card image will stay bugged on the board in its death position and physically prevent any interaction with any future minion that occupies that same board position. This is because the minion under Minion X's card image cannot be targeted by the mouse cursor.

Auchenai Soulpriest flipped heals on a Divine Shield minion trigger on-damage triggers

Normally, a Frothing Berserker does not trigger on damage reduced to 0, such as by a Divine Shield. But if you use an Auchenai Soulpriest and hit a Divine Shielded minion with a heal inverted into damage, the Frothing Berserker triggers once.

[Hearthstone Science] Soulpriest-flipped Heal into Divine Shield, Frothing Berserker bug

It also appears to happen with other on-damage triggers such as Acolyte of Pain.

Animations playing multiple times

If your action (spell, hero power, attack) gets interrupted by a trigger, its animation will play multiple times. Some of the exampes are listed below:

If you play Sacrificial Pact while having Auchenai Soulpriest and Floating Watcher in play, its animation will play twice.

If you use Armor Up! while having Siege Engine in play, their animation will play twice.

If you play spells, such as Dark Wispers or Unleash the Hounds while having Knife Juggler in play, their animation will play for each summoned minion.

If you play area of effect spells, such as Avenging Wrath while having Acolyte of Pain or Frothing Berserker in play, their animation will play multiple times. (Lightbomb no longer has the bug, neither does Elemental Destruction, they have been fixed in 5.0)

If you play Arcane Intellect and it draws Flame Leviathan, the animation repeats afterwards.

If Flare draws Burrowing Mine, Flare triggers again afterwards.

The sound effect of Jaraxxus' INFERNO! plays again for each Knife Juggler that triggers on Inferno's summon. Both players in the game can hear this bug.

Nat Pagle drawing into fatigue will repeat his quote "Ha, caught one!" (#83).

Astral Communion's animation repeats for each Fist of Jaraxxus in your hand.

Played Fan of Knives while having Shadowfiend on the board, the animation of Fan of Knives played twice.

Also can be observed when playing against Chromaggus (BRM boss). If you hold Brood Affliction: Black (Chromaggus gets a copy of a card he draws) and he plays Flameheart (Draw 2 cards, gain 4 armor), the spell animation is playing 3 times in total instead of just once.

The following issues have been fixed in the meantime:

  • If Starving Buzzard draws a fatigue card, instead of flashing before the fatigue card, it flashes afterwards.
  • If you play Shield Block or Shieldmaiden while having Siege Engine in play, their animation will play twice.
  • If your opponent gets healed by Truesilver's Champion (#98).

Mad Scientist deathrattle ignores 5 secret limit

Normally, there is a limit of 5 secrets that a player may have in play. However, Mad Scientist's Deathrattle ignores this limit. Mad Scientist will correctly not put into play a second copy of currently active secrets, but will put additional different secrets into play if available in the player's deck. This has been shown to allow at least 11 different secrets to be active on a hero at the same time. Secrets beyond the 5 limit will activate and take effect normally, and in the correct order.

Combat cancelled after death processing causes you to be unable to attack

If you begin combat, but triggers on preparing to attack (during the "Combat Preparation Phase") remove your target first, the attack aborts and you are not exhausted or lose durability. This is the normal case, and can be seen here: 2x heals with truesilver champion in one turn

However, if the target is alive after the "Combat Preparation Phase" BUT the Death Phase following the "Combat Preparation Phase" THEN causes your target to die, a glitch occurs where the attacker is stuck in mid air and cannot be used to attack again. For example, an enemy minion is summoned, triggering an enemy Knife Juggler, mortally wounding an allied Boom Bot. During the subsequent Death Phase the Boom Bot Deathrattle mortally wounds the defender, and THEN it is removed from play, and then combat glitches out. This has happened with both Hero and Minion attackers. The extra Death Phase seems to be the culprit.

Hobgoblin/Mistcaller buffed minion can become immortal

Under unknown circumstances, a minion buffed by Hobgoblin or Mistcaller can become immortal at 0 Health. This is not a visual bug - the Server will send you actions involving it, you can attempt to attack with it and fail (it moves a bit then the Server sends you your next set of actions, and it is still selectable), it takes up space on your board, you can target it with spells and both you and your opponent see it.

It can be targeted and buffed by spells, damaged, set TO_BE_DESTROYED without dying, healed, attempted to attack or attack with (the attack fails if either minion is at 0 Health, but buffs and heals can be used to make the minion valid for combat again). If its Health goes below 0, it is set back to 0. If it has Taunt, it can't be attacked past. If it is bounced to the hand and played again, it stops being immortal. If it has a triggered effect, it works normally ( https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/3ruu99/vitality_totem_glitchmight_be_gamebreaking/ ).

The minions it has been observed with are Echoing Ooze, Haunted Creeper, Micro Machine, Novice Engineer and Argent Squire (and possibly more). However, an Echoing Ooze is usually (always?) on the board at some point in the past.

It can also happen with Mistcaller instead of Hobgoblin:

Can it happen with NO attached enchantments?

If the immortal minion has Taunt, it prevents the opponent from attacking past it:

If you freeze a friendly newly summoned minion, it will unfreeze at the end of your turn

This bug only happens with summoned minions, minions played from hand will work correctly. For example playing Animal Companion which summons Leokk and freezing him by Frost Elemental will unfreeze at the end of your turn. This might be related: tag=JUST_PLAYED value=1 is attached to every card played from hand, but is not copied over to the minions that will get summoned by it.

Similar happens to frozen Echoing Ooze or a frozen minion copied by Faceless Manipulator. Herald Volazj presumably has the same bug.

Tracking doesn't run on-discard triggers

(This is in spite of the card using 'discard' in its text.)

For example, Tiny Knight of Evil does not trigger.

On-draw effects have been fixed in Patch 8.0, old reports are listed below:

Chromaggus previously did not trigger when Tracking was played. No card was generated by Chromaggus.

Cards that discard another cards from your hand do not display the discarded cards in the sidebar

Only the player sees the bug.

New to 3.0, when you play a card that discards another cards from your hand and mouse over the sidebar, the cards it discarded are not shown.

xtcdpig

Your opponent's sidebar will show the discarded cards correctly.

Playing Alarm-o-Bot then Doomsayer puts a 'destroyed' minion in your hand

If Doomsayer and Alarm-o-Bot are played in that order, at the start of the next turn, Doomsayer triggers first, followed by Alarm-o-bot. Since death is not checked for until all triggers have resolved, both succeed in triggering, and a bugged Alarm-o-bot card is returned to hand. If the player tries to play the bugged Alarm-o-bot from hand, it dies immediately on entering the Battlefield. This is similar to the Vaporize and Freezing Trap bug.
