ios-goodies's Introduction

iOS Goodies

iOS Goodies is currently on pause, at least until the end of 2021. Please don't submit new articles for the next edition.

iOS Goodies is a weekly newsletter containing the best1 links of the week for iOS developers.

Hi there! I'm Marius. I'm an iOS developer who's been working in this industry for almost 10 years now. I'm passionate about what I do and I like to stay up to date with the latest news and trends on iOS development. Since I read a lot of articles about iOS development, it makes sense to gather them somewhere. I've "inherited" this newsletter in 2017 from Rui and Tiago, and since then I try to share the best articles of the week while keeping a focus on new voices in our community. If you are one of those new voices in our community, feel free to open a pull request and add your content, or just reach out here or on Twitter.

How can I contribute?

Please read our contributing guidelines and our code of conduct. ๐Ÿ˜„

We are quite happy when you share articles that you have seen here, if that happens, spread the love and mention us (@iOSGoodies)

ios-goodies's Issues

iOS app for iOS-Goodies

Have you guys thought about building an app to deliver the articles each week?

As a reader I think it would be useful to have all these articles in one place, that's searchable, sorted by topics and available offline.

Would love to help out with building it too of course.

Missing article Week 402

Hi @mariusc and @dkhamsing , it turns out my article did not make it into the week 402 newsletter (I acknowledge if my article maybe will not be in the newsletter)
https://michaelabadi.com/articles/create-calendar-view-swiftui/

I am asking because I created this article after people were interested in my approach to solve this UI in my tweet and tweet2. and I would like to share how I did it with more readers.
Is there any specific reason I did not make it? Any feedback makes me feel much better and not feel sad :D. Feedback appreciated so I can do better on the next article ๐Ÿ™.

Thank you.
Michael

Question about eligibility

I created ARHeadsetKit, a high-level framework for experimenting with AR and making AR headset experiences affordable ($5 vs. the $3500 Microsoft Hololens). After spending 2000+ hours on it myself (that's not a typo), I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. However, no matter how many people I reach out to, almost nobody responds. I have a massive barrier to spreading information about this, so I would like to participate in this newsletter.

I recently released hours worth of ARHeadsetKit tutorial content (see "Tutorial Series" on the README), which took me dozens of hours of elapsed time to make. From the three people who have tried them so far, I had immensely positive reactions. They are very similar to Apple's SwiftUI tutorials. I'm wondering if you could try them out yourself, and find a way to ask others to in your newsletter.

In addition to qualifying as an Article, my experience could fall under the Business/Career category, because I learned the harsh reality of having high expectations for a personal open-source framework.

It would be perfect if @mariusc highlighted ARHeadsetKit in the intro for a weekly letter. That would be an insane help, but it's probably too much to ask for.

Are you open to considering ARHeadsetKit for the newsletter?

Missing article in Week329

Hi, I have noticed that you missed out "A security review of 1,300 AppStore applications" on ios-goodies.com. It's was approved to the master branch but does not appear on the website. Can you add it to the next week release?

Version PT-Br?

Hi, @mariusc and all,
Iโ€™ve been following goodies for a long time and this year I intend to start helping curate interesting links and be a maintainer.
In addition, I was wondering if it would be possible to translate the newsletter into Brazilian Portuguese where not everyone can follow content in English. I am available to do this weekly translation and have a PT-Br version.

Proposal: Promote events

Just dropping an idea here.
Since this is a Newsletter built mostly with content suggested by the community, would be interesting to also accept free and variadic events/meetups.

I can give you an example for context: This week we're having our first Cocoaheads Porto and since it's something that never happened before would have been great to feature/showcase this event in the last week newsletter.

I believe, with some rules, this could be a great way to promote early/unknown local events.

Thanks!

Article in issue 318 link does not match the title or author

The item Getting Started with RxSwift and RxCocoa by @goktuggumus actually links to Everything you need to know about Memory Leaks in iOS by Ali Akhtar. I'm not clear if the intent was to include one or the other or both of these articles, so I can't open a PR for a fix.

Publishing

Hello all, first thanks for all the time you put into the issues. It's a really fun and I hope very helpful open-source project.

Out of hundreds of issues, it was very rare that we did not publish timely each week ๐ŸŽ‰

Now I don't know all the details that go into publishing but I think @tiagoalmeida is the main person doing it.

Would it be helpful to have a backup person in case Tiago is unavailable?

@RuiAAPeres
@tiagoalmeida
@mariusc
@rbarbosa
and many people I forget (feel free to cc)

Please ๐Ÿ‘ or ๐Ÿ‘Ž this and we can go from there..

Thx!

Terminal app

Hi there!

Terminal is an app working as a sandboxed terminal.
Since this is an App targeted to developers and open-sourced, we could feature this in one of iOSGoodies issues.

Let me know what you think.
Cheers ๐Ÿช

Expanding the Business category or introducing a new one

Of all the categories we have, I think Business is the one with the least number of links. Or at least, for me, it's the hardest to find good content for (most likely because I'm not looking in the right places - I'm an iOS dev and follow mostly tech and dev stuff).

At the same time, every now and then I stumble over articles like http://martiancraft.com/blog/2017/11/rookie-mistakes/ or the ones in https://www.swiftbysundell.com/meta/, or similar, focusing on productivity, and growth as a developer.
The description of the Business section says

Business - These articles should help the typical developer to understand how business is conducted. This could be related to the App store ecosystem, or how-to run your business as an indie dev, App marketing, etc. It can also be related about your experience while working at some company, what you liked, and what you didn't like.

That doesn't really cover the type of articles I mentioned above, but it's still the most appropriate section to put them (compared to the others).

I'm wondering if we should rename business into "Business and <something>" - not really sure what that <something> should be: career? personal growth? developer hapiness? Or if we should make a new category for those kind of articles.

@rbarbosa @dkhamsing @LisaDziuba @franciscoamado and all other contributors, I'd be curious to hear your opinion on this :)
