Good idea!

Whether the choices should be passed to the widget or the field needs to be decided. We could have, for instance:

favourite_fruit = forms.TextField(
    widget=forms.CharField(datalist=(
        ('apple', 'Apple'),
        ('banana', 'Banana'),
        ('orange', 'Orange'),
    ),
)

I'd be pretty happy with such a syntax. I'm not sure how <datalist> plays with the <option> selected or disabled attrs, we'll need to determine whether we want to support them or not.

I guess the field vs widget decision depends on whether you consider a list of suggestions to be integral to the form field, or just the way it's displayed. In which case I think you're right that the widget could be a more appropriate place - it's essentially a UX aid.

Chrome & Firefox both ignore selected but omit any options with the disabled attribute, although their application to <option> tags in <datalist> elements isn't specifically mentioned in the W3C specs.
