gtk-theme's Introduction

A GTK+ theme for Pop!_OS

Required Components

Pop supports Gtk+ 3.22.x

* Gtk+-3.0             >= 3.22
* Gtk+-2.0             >= 2.24.30
* gtk2-engines-pixbuf  >= 2.24.30
* gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1

Recommendations

Window Titles: Fira Sans SemiBold 10

Interface: Fira Sans Book 10

Documents: Roboto Slab Regular 11

Monospace: Fira Mono Regular 11

Installation

Pop is intended to be installed through the package manager. Packages for Pop are available in PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:system76/pop
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pop-theme

It's recommended to use the pop-theme metapackage, as this will pull in all components of the look. However, individual components can be installed separately, e.g:

sudo apt install pop-gtk-theme

It's also recommended to restart the GNOME Shell after applying the theme of your choice.

Enter the Shell's command launcher

Alt + F2

This will restart the Shell after you hit Enter

r

Installation from Git Source

This is the recommended method for users who aren't on Pop.

Note: You must have sassc installed in order to build Pop. Users of 17.04 or later can all build-dependencies using:
sudo apt install sassc meson libglib2.0-dev

For making modifications to assets, you will additionally need these two:

sudo apt install inkscape optipng
  1. If previous versions were installed/existed, remove them first.
sudo apt remove pop-gtk-theme
sudo rm -rf /usr/share/themes/Pop*
rm -rf ~/.local/share/themes/Pop*
rm -rf ~/.themes/Pop*
  1. Clone the repository.
git clone https://github.com/pop-os/gtk-theme.git
cd gtk-theme
  1. Generate the theme files.
meson build && cd build
ninja
  1. Install the theme.
ninja install

Rebuilding after modifications:

You shouldn't need to rebuild the entire theme after modifications. If you make changes to any GTK3 or GTK2 assets, delete the old rendered copies and use the render-assets.sh script to regenerate those with new ones with your modifications.

TODO

  • Prepare for Steam theming (priority: Low)

Support colorPrimary headerbar branding

This is more of a discussion point than a for sure TODO. elementary, Granite, and AppCenter apps use the @colorPrimary GTK CSS variable to colorize the headerbar; you can see this in Eddy as well as apps like Football, Ciano, News, Notejot, Palaura, Swatches, and Vocal which all set the headerbar color with @colorPrimary.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Supporting all three of our theme variants (standard, light, dark)
  • Ensuring foreground (label and button colors) still contrast

This would be a nice step in the direction of better Granite/elementary API support, and would make apps designed originally for elementary OS fit in better on Pop!_OS.

README File Outdated?

I tried to compile this theme from source, but it seems like the instructions in the README file are outdated; autogen.sh does not exist for example

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Support .titlebar class for headerbars

It's a convention in elementary and AppCenter apps to use a .titlebar class on the headerbar to be able to reduce the padding and make it look like a normal titlebar while still packing in some buttons. elementary Terminal, for example, uses this for its search and font-size buttons.

Something like this would support that convention:

headerbar.titlebar {
	padding-top: 0;
	padding-bottom: 0;
}

headerbar.titlebar button {
	margin-top: 0;
	margin-bottom: 0;
}

That takes elementary Terminal in Pop!_OS from this:

screenshot from 2017-10-04 22-14-54

...to this:

screenshot from 2017-10-04 22-15-10

...which is more how it's designed to look.

The titlebar on Terminal and few other apps is too short.

NOTE: Before reporting a bug, please check whether it also occurs with other themes.

If the bug also occurs with other themes (especially upstream default theme),
it is very likely an upstream issue.

Message Dialog buttons don't respect suggested-action or destructive action classes

When setting a button to have a suggested-action or destructive-action class in regular windows, the styling changes to reflect this. In a message dialog's buttons, setting either class doesn't change color.

There is no indication that an action is suggested or destructive.

In Adwaita, suggested message dialog buttons are blue and destructive ones are red.

Support for Ubuntu 16.04

The README states nothing about which versions of Ubuntu are supported. I had to install the PPA simply to see that xenial is not supported on that PPA. I also verified that the pop theme has been removed from the system76 stable PPA.

Is there any plan to support Ubuntu 16.04 for the pop-gtk-theme? Is there a different PPA that supports xenial for the pop-gtk-theme (than the one listed in the README)?

If the answer is no to both of those questions, how then would one get the pop-gtk-theme installed on xenial? I attempted to install from source, but the prerequisite sassc isn't available in the default repos of xenial.

GNOME Shell

Actual issue
When you search for apps background of the seleced app is very hard to see in the pop-dark/compact gnome shell theme, see the screenshot or try it yourself :) I think just a little bit less transparence could do the trick

Expected behavior

Behavior in Adwaita

Other Note (feature-request, question, etc...)

Insensitive entries in headerbars are non-distinct

Insensitive entries in headerbars are not clearly distinct from sensitive ones; they appear to retain the same opacity and colors. Adwaita grays them out a little bit, while elementary is a bit more drastic.

I noticed this specifically in Pop!_Shop/AppCenter, but it affects any app (confirmed by using inspector to mark the search entry in GNOME Maps as insensitive).

Screenshots

In these screenshots, the entry is sensitive on the Home screen, but insensitive on the Updates screen.
