The website is currently down, so what's up here?
Could not it e.g. be hosted at GitHub Pages which should easily stay up, at least? To have somewhat of a stable resource?
It should be renowned instead of reknowned:
https://computefreely.org/distro/debian
I see that KDE Neon is missing from the list of distros on the homepage.
@snwh I've wrote about your site computefreely.org at https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/campaign-to-get-windows-7-users-to-upgrade-to-linux/1015 (edit: and https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/campaign-to-get-windows-7-users-to-upgrade-to-linux/9563) and expressed some ideas about maybe making a campaign to get Windows 7 users to upgrade to Linux?
Maybe you want to have a look/check it out.
As for this site, maybe you can adjust it/make some special "Upgrade/Switch" page, or so? No idea…, just wanted to let you know.
Elementary OS 6 was released. Now it can be considered as an intermediate.
In terms of design, elementary OS remains very beautiful and cohesive. But now it doesn't fit with beginner user.
Some points that can be considered:
There may be cases when there is a need to run Windows apps and programs, for example compatibility with certain MS Office features.
It seems currently you do not track visitor counts or so.
However, I guess it may be quite interesting for this site to do.
Of course, in a privacy-preserving way, i.e. do not use Google Analytics, but good things like https://matomo.org/ (formerly Piwik), preferably self-hosted.
It may be interesting e.g. to see whether (and how much of a) spark there is when Win 7 support is ending (#27) or whether other events increase site visits or so.
Just to get some insights in trends or so…
What do you think about recategorizing the existing operating systems into:
It would be great to add the following operating systems to your website:
Where is our supreme leader's operating system, the Red Star OS?
FYI there is a fork at https://www.trylinux.today/

(though legally they kept the license statements, so it is all fine.)
At https://www.trylinux.today/about/ it says:
Try Linux is a fork of the popular (but now unmaintained site) Compute Freely by Sam Hewitt, and aims to carry on the tradition of making Linux more accessible to everyone.
I see no tries that they did to contact you here. Did they?
Is this project really unmaintained?
Edit: I've asked for a better credit: https://gitlab.com/danarel/trylinux/-/issues/1
@snwh What happened to the Paper icon theme? Is it abandoned? It was my favorite theme. And Papirus sucks. It's too blue and the folders have that weird paper in them. Guess I have to make a fork of Papirus and add all the old Paper icons to it.
Since iTunes is mentioned in the Music section it would maybe be useful to add gtkpod. Or is the time of iPods over?
I could work on a pull request if wanted.
Any chance you could re-buy it? I liked this website a lot. Alternatively, I could buy it for you and re-direct it here.
All Ubuntu versions should have 19.04 listed as the latest version.
Are you planning on implementing a way to translate this website to various languages?
Maybe mention the lightweight variant Zorin OS Lite? Nice website :D
it is infrequently updated and a tendency to lag behind the competition in terms providing the latest and greatest software.
Is that still valid?
Actually is the release actually schedule is roughly 2 years which is the same as Ubuntu LTS.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian_version_history#Release_table
They (Debian and Ubuntu LTS) are offset by 1 year so it's hard to compare directly. Do we have something tangible to continue to label Debian this way?
With Ubuntu (core) returning to GNOME, Ubuntu GNOME stopped shipping new releases. Their latest release is Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 and it doesn't seem like they have any interest in releasing new versions, so it's as good as dead now.
