keepalivehd's Issues

Fails for drive offline

If an external drive goes offline the app generates fail messages for each attempt to write. There is no way to kill the process other than a reboot.

stall on system boot

During a reboot after sleeping, the app caused Windows to stall. An error eventually poped up stating the data could not be savede, etc.. Afterward, Windows rebooted normally.
The suggestion is take into account the possiblilty the app will be running when the PC goes to sleep.

Tray icon

Please add the options to always show tray icon and to display the window on double click on tray icon.

Possible to port this to Linux-based systems like Ubuntu?

I realize this is probably a lot to ask, but will KeepAliveHD ever be ported to Linux?

If KeepAliveHD can't be ported to Linux but the author has any Linux experience, may I ask how I would achieve the same functionality of KeepAliveHD on an Ubuntu system, using other software? Any software recommendations or step by step instructions as to how you would get the same functionality on a Linux machine?

Thanks for this little piece of software, by the way. Very useful for keeping USB hard drives from spinning down and possibly dying. And thanks for moving to Github after Codeplex shut down.

Feature request: install as a servce

It would be nice if the application could have an option to install itself as a system service, so that the user can remove the icon from systray, having the process always running in background.

[Enhancement] add drive letter to error messages

I use KeepAliveHD with a number of external drives.

My drives are sometimes removed or turned off.

When this happens, KeepAliveHD shows an error but I cant determine which drive it related to because the error message does not include the drive details

The current error message is

KeepAliveHD.exe - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \KeepAliveHD.txt; the data has been lost. This error may be caused if the device has been removed or the media is write-protected.

Please add the drive letter somewhere in the error message.
I suggest the following, with the drive letter mentioned in the window title and error text

KeepAliveHD.exe - Delayed Write Failed H:

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file H:\KeepAliveHD.txt; the data has been lost. This error may be caused if the device has been removed or the media is write-protected.

Thank you for the software.
It has been useful to me.

many month's no problem and running fine.

Menu/GUI doesn't open

After I added the initial setting, I can't get the menu to open. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. Tried installing different version too. Nothing's happening.

Write error when resuming from sleep

Whenever I open my laptop's lid and it resumes from sleep mode, I see this error message:

I also get the following two errors in Windows Event Log:

[Enhancement] disable drive when show error message

I use 6 external hard drives and use KeepAliveHD to keep all of them active

I sometimes remove or turn off one of these drives.

When that happens, KeepAliveHD repeatedly shows this error message ...

KeepAliveHD.exe - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \KeepAliveHD.txt; the data has been lost. This error may be caused if the device has been removed or the media is write-protected.

If I close this message, it reappeared again and I cant get rid of it

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

  • only show the message once
  • include an option to silence the message for the next X minutes, perhaps 60 minutes is a good option

Any way to run this in non-interactive mode?

Like in Task Scheduler, for example, so it's not dependent upon someone logging in.

I've tried doing that on Win10, and it certainly runs, but it doesn't do anything (Task Manager shows that reads/writes stop accruing immediately, and KeepAliveHD.txt is never updated). It's the same result when run as a service.

I've seen this with some programs before when trying to run this way, and sometimes it relates to the fact that their tray icon never appears, which is the case here. It doesn't really matter that it doesn't appear, since it's already configured--and the system may just be on with no user logged in anyway--except for the possibility that this may be what's stopping it from working when run like this.

Thanks for an ideas, and keep up the good work

Problem with latest version and Seagate 8tb Archive HDDs in external enclosure usb 3.0 connected to usb 2.0 port.

I have been using KeepAliveHD 1.62 beta for a few months and lately I have been having my music stop playing when playing HD videos from an 8tb Seagate Archive drive and having KA set to write every 22 seconds to the drive. It didn't happen constantly but it happened at least once or twice in a night during a 4 hour period. I checked the hard drive thoroughly with SeaTools and chkdsk and didn't find any problems. Got this error in the Windows system error logs.
image
Application popup: .NET-BroadcastEventWindow.4.0.0.0.348c725.0: KeepAliveHD.exe - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \KeepAliveHD.txt; the data has been lost. This error may be caused if the device has been removed or the media is write-protected.

After this popup I got many errors while playing the video and the video and sound stopped completely for over 30 seconds until I loaded a new track into the player.

Here is the error I got over and over in the error log related to the hard drive it was reading from (and KA was writing to): An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation.

Once I turned off KA on that hard drive it didn't have any errors and I tested it for over 12 hours straight playing videos.

[Request] Option to Hide Tray Icon

Please include an option to Hide the tray icon, so that the program can run invisibly if the user chooses.

In order to display the KeepAliveHD window, the user would simply run the keepaliveHd.exe again (or a shortcut to it) and this would restore the window from its hidden state.

The Window "tray" notification area is really meant for programs that send notifications and alerts to the user, rather than being just a quick launch area. Once I have set up my KeepAliveHD options, I have little need to keep changing them on a regular basis, so the icon always being present in the notification area is somewhat redundant. Windows can prevent a tray icon from displaying permanently on the taskbar, but it can't remove it from the notification area altogether.

Having the option to show or hide the KeepAliveHD icon lets the user decide for themselves how they wish to use it.

Thanks!

The program is showing on Alt+Tab list

The program is showing on Alt+Tab list.
To replicate, use Alt+Tab immediately after the computer starts.
After that, the program is not present in the list.
Please fix it.

Automatic check of disk online status

I kindly ask you to tell me if an automatic check of disk online status can be added to KeepAliveHD.
With this feature activated, the program can check at a time interval if other disks becomes active/online and to enable writing automatically if they are on writing mode list.

[Enhancement] multi-select enable / disable drives on the Configuration tab

Please add the ability to disable and enable multi-selected drives on the configuration tab

SUGGESTED USER INTERFACE CHANGES

  1. right mouse button to show a popup menu with options for enable / disable / remove

  2. add buttons for [Enabled Drive] and [Disable Drive] similar to the current [Remove Drive] button. If this makes the screen to cluttered just skip this and go with option (1) above instead

Thank you

Feature Request: portable version

Make a portable version of KeepAliveHD... or at least allow the installation file to be unzipped.
Thanks for your application! It's quite helpful when viewing media from a drive I prefer to go idle when not in use.

1.6.2 read does not work

I notice my drive going to sleep when read is set and I don't see any activity? I tried setting it to the root of the drive or a folder. Is there a trick to it? Thanks.

Delayed Write Failed

I get this error message, and when I press OK or cross it out, it instantly reappears.

image

The error message does not show which drive that leads to the issue, and cant be removed, even though Ive force closed the application with task manager the error window is impossible to remove.

Removable drives shown as 'fixed' and are not enabled

This app is useful when it works, but it has always had issues recognizing that a removable drive is just that - removable! It fails to reconnect external drives and to make it worse it identifies them as 'fixed'.

Because it doesn't cope with removable drives it fails to keep them awake. Can you please fix it?

Log error messages bug

When log error messages is OFF, KeepAliveHD still creates log files (empty) in AppData\Roaming.
Please make the program to stop creating files when log is off.

I think your latest 1.6.2-beta needs an update.....

Unless I'm wrong, 1 second interval isn't really 1 second, well it is for the first few seconds, but after that it takes long and longer.......eventually the 1 second interval will turn into a 30 second interval, 31 second interval, 50 second interval 2 minutes.....you get the idea..... I think this might be a thing for other intervals too, if you set it for 5 minutes, it's 5 minutes for the first few times but then gradually gets longer.....and longer......until that interval becomes too long that windows 10's USB standby/sleep mode kicks and rendering the drive dead and the only way to kick it going again is to pull out the plug and replug it in...and rinse and repeat with your KeepAliveHD program....

Now if you could somehow fix this bug such that it reads the the drive in its specified interval CONSISTENTLY, then your program will work for long hrs.....like more than 8 hrs straight of continuous work.....

As it stands, it basically shits itself after the 1 hr mark forcing me to replug the damn USB drive.....2 hrs if your lucky.......
