RFE: patch plink.exe to enable connection to cygterm saved sessions

It would be rad if you patched plink.exe to enable its use with cygterm saved
sessions. Right now, using plink.exe on a cygterm session results in the
following:

C:\Users\admin>"C:\Program Files (x86)\PuTTY\plink.exe" -l LOCALHOST "ls -la"
Unable to open connection:
Host does not exist

Thanks.

When Cygwin SSH disconnects, puttycyg seems to hang

Sometimes I work locally on my PC, then ssh somewhere else and forget the
connection. When the remote end disconnects, puttycyg seems to hang. My
only option is to close the window. I expect to continue locally.

puttycyg with Xming?

is it possible to use Xming with puttycyg to run X-windows from the localhost
(sort of like Cygwin/X functionality)? I use putty w/ Xming for all remote
hosts, and puttycyg for my cygwin terminal, but I'd like to enable X-windows
on my (windows) desktop, as well. is this possible?

thanks

PuTTYcyg Agent Forwarding support?

> What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Open PuttyCyg
2. Set Hostname to "-"
3. Set Connection type to "Cygterm"
4. Make sure Connection -> SSH -> Auth -> "Allow agent forwarding" is enabled
5. Click open
6. Run "env | grep SSH_AUTH_SOCK"

> What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The output does not show the environment variable being set, indicating
agent forwarding is not supported. Instead, I expected the environment
variable SSH_AUTH_SOCK would be set.

Lack of prompts in bzr

Please read the FAQ and check existing issues before creating a new issue.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install cygwin
2. Install bazaar (through the windows installer)
3. Install puttycyg

What is the expected result? What happens instead?
bzr uncommit does not display a prompt asking for the approval of changes,
nor does it allow input (thus bzr remains unresponsive and a bzr break-lock
from another non-cygterm terminal is required). bzr pull does not display
pull phases. All of this works correctly when running cygwin from cmd.exe.

PutTTYcyg version: 20091228
Cygwin version: CYGWIN_NT-6.0 <hostname> 1.7.1(0.218/5/3) 2009-12-07 11:48
i686 Cygwin
Windows version: Vista SP2

I exported the registry key and looked through it; it only contains saved
sessions (which shouldnt affect cygterm) and keys. If it's really necessary
I will scrub it of all personal information and post it, but don't expect
there to be much remaining.

unable to run Python interpreter

Regardless of how I try to do it I can't get the Python interpreter to run
under a puttycyg terminal. If I run it from cmd or from bash nothing is
shown and the terminal has to be closed. Running python scripts still works.

I'm using puttycyg 20071202 under Windows XP SP2 and running Python 2.5.1.

PuTTYcyg immediately vanishes on startup

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install cygwin (used install dir C:\Bin\Cygwin)
2. Install PuTTYcyg
3. Start PuTTYcyg with options -cygterm - (or -cygterm bash -i -l, or
equivalent)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I would like to see the PuTTY window. Instead the window pops up and
immediately vanishes. I don't get any popup message, or output when run
from the console.

PuTTYcyg version: 20071202
Cygwin version: 1.5.25-15 (but also tested using the 1.5.24-2 dll)
Windows version: XP SP 3

If you are experiencing performance issues, do you have a dual-core system
or multiple CPUs or do you have any firewall software installed?

My issue isn't performance per se, but I my system is a dual core system,
and I have Window's default firewall enabled, not that it has ever given me
problems with vanilla PuTTY before (and I always add exceptions for
applications I use anyways).

Please provide any additional information below.

I have checked for multiple copies of cygwin1.dll. I am entirely certain
there are no other copies on PATH, because if I move the copy I have,
PuTTYcyg reports that it can't find the dll. And I have also run a search
of my entire C:\ drive, just to be completely and absolutely certain.

I also tried reverting the cygwin1.dll version to 1.5.24-2 as suggested by
some users in issue 1, which didn't help.

I have also tried moving PuTTYcyg and cthelper into the C:\Bin\Cygwin\bin
folder, just in case the automatic location feature was failing somehow,
which also didn't help.

Am I missing anything? Is there any way I can extract debug info from
PuTTYcyg to help diagnose the problem?

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

terminal problems with cygwin 1.7

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Cygwin 1.7. The current best explanation of how to do this is
at http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-apps/2008-08/msg00079.html.
2. Start a cygwin 1.7 shell, i.e. C:\cygwin-1.7\bin\bash.exe --login
3. Set PS1='\[\033]0;\]\w\[\007\]\n\[\033[1;36m\]$ \[\033[0m\]' .

What is the expected output?
With PS1 set as above in cygwin 1.5.x, I get a light cyan $ prompt, and the
name of the current directory in the window title bar.

What do you see instead?
- There is no prompt string, as if PS1=''.
- Other text that normally is displayed in colors is all rendered in white.
- The window title bar text is still at the default ('Cygterm - PuTTY').

Which version of PuTTYcyg are you using? 20071202
Which version of Windows? XP SP3
What version of Cygwin? 1.7.0-29
Do you have a dual-core system or multiple CPUs? No
Any firewall software installed? No

Thanks,
Andrew.

PuTTYcyg is incompatible with Cygwin 1.7

PuTTYcyg uses the Registry to find cygwin1.dll, which will not work with
Cygwin 1.7. Dual installations of Cygwin (1.5 and 1.7 on the same system)
will not work as expected -- PuTTYcyg finds Cygwin 1.5.

cygterm.c shouldn't add things to PATH

cygterm.c tries to look at the Windows registry to find where the Cygwin
bin directory is and then sticks that at the end of PATH. This is
unexpected and can cause problems for users with non-standard setups.
Users should use their own rc/profile files (or just set their Windows
PATH) to set up their Cygwin PATH.

In particular, Cygwin 1.7 is in public testing now. Instead of using the
Windows registry by default for mounts, it uses /etc/fstab. Since most
people won't only have a 1.7 install (it's recommended you keep your old
1.5 install and install 1.7 in a different location), the 1.5 registry keys
will probably exist. So even when puttycyg uses the 1.7 bash, it will
stick the 1.5 bin directory in the path.

If puttycyg is to keep the behavior of modifying PATH, then in the future
for 1.7, it'll have to figure out to check /etc/fstab. But I recommended
the behavior be removed completely.

cthelper search cygwin1.dll in :
c:\cygwin2\usr\local\bin
c:\windows\system32
c:\windows\system
c:\windows
then
c:\cygwin2
$PATH
c:\cygwin\bin

while it should also search for :
c:\cygwin2\usr\bin
c:\cygwin2\bin

from its run path before to try for :
c:\cygwin2

to bypass this problem, simply copy
c:\cygwin2\bin\cygwin1.dll to c:\cygwin2

but that's not ideal in case of
c:\cygwin2\bin\cygwin1.dll upgrade

Clean Installation of Cygin 1.7.5-1; Unpackage and run puttycyg with "putty.exe -cygterm -"; result PuTTY Fatal Error, Failed to allocate pseudoterminal

Please read the FAQ and check existing issues before creating a new issue.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Cygwin 1.7.5
2. Install PuTTYCyg
3. Run "putty.exe -cygterm -"

What is the expected result? What happens instead?

I would expect putty to connect to a cygwin shell, but instead it produces
"PuTTY Fatal Error, Failed to allocate pseudoterminal"

PutTTYcyg version: 20091228
Cygwin version: 1.7.5
Windows version: XP Pro SP2

If you are experiencing performance issues, do you have a multi-core system
or multiple CPUs?

Do you have any firewall software installed?
Nope

Please attach your PuTTY configuration. Use this Windows command to create
putty.reg:
REG EXPORT HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY putty.reg

Please provide any additional information below.

Previously had a working puttycyg with cygwin 1.5 but ceased to work after
clean install to 1.7.5. Before upgrade, the entire previous cygwin
installation directory was deleted, as well as all associated registry
keys. There are not multiple copies of the cygwin1.dll on the system path,
only in $CYGWIN_HOME/bin.

I have run mkpasswd and mkgroup after my initial cygwin install. My home is
set to /home/$WINDOWS_USERNAME under the cygwin install.

Installation seems to be detected ok, as if I remove cygwin1.dll from /bin,
puttycyg complains that it is missing when attempting to start session.
Putting it back ceases that errorm, but results in the "failed to allocate
pseudoterminal" error.

Googling for the error only seems to return the piece source good where the
error string is set. I can't believe I'm the only one on earth to have had
this problem if a configuration issue.

Slow performance on startup

Hi,

I think this is related to defect #2. I also experience a delay of up to 12
seconds from the moment when I start puttycyg, until I get the login prompt.
Taking into accounts the comments by medgar123, I disabled the local FW prior
to running the below tests:

A. Baseline, without using puttycyg (times reported are averages real time on 5
consecutive runs)

1. C:\>bash -c "time bash -c 'echo hello world'"         ==> 0m0.108s
2. C:\>bash -c "time bash --login -c 'echo hello world'" ==> 0m3.662s

B. Puttycyg tests (times measured by hand)
I created a shortcut, and set "start in" equal to putty.exe folder.

1. target "C:\Program Files\PuTTYcyg\putty.exe" -cygterm bash          ==> <1s
(nearly immediate)
2. target "C:\Program Files\PuTTYcyg\putty.exe" -cygterm -             ==> ~4s
3. target "C:\Program Files\PuTTYcyg\putty.exe" -cygterm bash --login  ==> ~4s

So far, so good - times are consistent with Windows console and bad performance
is probably caused by cygwin login process itself (btw, I have default profile
and bashrc).

Now the next step, using a saved session, shortcut on Destkop
4. target "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\PuTTYcyg\putty.exe" -load CygWin     ==> ~4s
5. same as 4, but shortcut is copied to quick start ==> ~4s

Here comes the weird part. When I modify shortcuts 4 & 5, to have the "start
in" field empty (same target)
6. shortcut on destkop ==> ~4s, still consistent
7. shortcut in quick start ==> 10-12s !!!!!

Obviously this is not critical as I have found a workaround, but still the
behavior is quite strange, although I'm not sure it's really caused by puttycyg
itself.

This behavior was consistently reproduced on 2 different XP machines.

As a side note, if you have any idea why the cygwin login process is taking so
long, I would love to hear it.

PutTTYcyg version: 20101029
Cygwin version: 1.7.7-1
Windows version: XP SP3 (5.1.2600)

If you are experiencing performance issues, do you have a multi-core system
or multiple CPUs? Yes (Intel Core2 Duo)

Do you have any firewall software installed? Yes, McAfee HIPS (disabled for the
tests above, but identical results when running)

Can puttycyg do like this?

I tried to use bash as default shell for vim, cos there are so many reasons
we need bash not cmd.exe :)

Vim call vimrun to run system command as default, so I replace vimrun.exe
as puttycyg, and I set shell=\"-\", then I can use external command in vim
to start up cygwin with puttycyg window(just type :! then press enter key).

It seems work till this step, but I can't transfer any command arguments to
run in puttycyg window after start up, like use :!echo "Hello World" in vim.

Can puttycyg support this function: transfer one command argument(like echo
command) into cygwin after login shell then run this command automatically?
So we can use bash as default shell then use any Unix command in vim even
under windows.

Thank you so much!

I have a pretty slow hard drive on my laptop and sometimes my computer freezes
and upon further investigation I found that the disk queue length (windows
control panel -> administrative services -> performance) was > 10,000...  I
began closing all my programs one by one to try to identify the culprit and to
my amazement, it was cthelper.exe. Once I closed that process the disk queue
dropped and my laptop's responsiveness returned to normal. I wasn't even
tailing a file in my puttycyg window, it was idle. Very odd. What does that
process do? Is there anyway to tone down its IO chattiness?

cthelper appears in a console window

I have been using PuttyCyg for a while before this without any problems;
thanks for a great tool! The binaries have worked great for me. However,
after I compile PuttyCyg on my own machine, whenever I start a puttycyg
session to cygwin, a second console window opens up with what I presume is
cthelper running, and it displays a bunch of debug messages whenever a key
is pressed or input received in the puttycyg terminal.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

2. Run PuttyCyg with a Cygwin terminal

more of a putty issue: unicocde cleansing?

putty doesn't seem to be progressing and i suspect that this may be beyond
the scope of your puttycyg intentions, but I would be _most grateful_ for a
filter on pasted text that could translate those accursed smart quotes that
are incresingly common into ascii... cut and paste has become such a chore
these days. *sigh*

putty cygwin closes when large flood comes from terminal

Run a program that produces a bunch of output, and cygwin putty dies.

I think this is due to the cthelper buffers running out of room, or
something like that. It looks like the putty side of things just gets an
FD_CLOSE from the socket, so I think the problem has to be in cthelper.

Repro:
Compile this and run it:
 #include <iostream>
 int main() { for (int i = 0;;) { std::cout << i++ << '\n'; } }
%./a.exe
[prints a bunch of growing numbers and then putty closes at around 16k]

The 'less' program fails when talking to PuTTYcyg

Please read the FAQ and check existing issues before creating a new issue.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run 'less <filename>' in a PuTTYcyg window.
2.
3.
4.

What is the expected result? What happens instead?

It's expected to show <filename> one page at a time (with partial page
scrolling, etc).

What happens is that as soon as 'less' starts, it stops in the background
as if ^Z had been typed. There is no output. If you foreground the process,
the first page of the document is sent to the screen, but then 'less' stops
in the background again. If you foreground 'less' again, the window hangs
and the 'less' process shows (with 'ps') as waiting for input.

Cygwin version: 1.7
Windows version: XP, sp3

If you are experiencing performance issues, do you have a multi-core system
or multiple CPUs?

Do you have any firewall software installed? Yes, but it's not causing
problems for mintty, so I doubt that it is for PuTTY.

putty.reg:
REG EXPORT HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY putty.reg

struct backend_tag has changed in PUTTY.H file

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. get a recent PuTTY snapshot from PuTTY site
2. modify PuTTY source with PuTTYcyg patch
3. compile and run a cygterm protocol (ex: cmd.exe /k)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Putty should start but it failed (crash)

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.
Recently the struct backend_tag has changed (two new items: name and protocol).
see PUTTY.H file.

I fixed it by initialing them to "cygterm" and PROT_CYGTERM into cygterm.c file.

Can you fix it in your official release ?

Thanks for that great add-on

After runemacs.exe, puttycyg waits before closing

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start puttycyg, set to always close on exit
2. Execute runemacs.exe, leave emacs running
3. Exit bash shell (Ctrl-D)

What is the expected result? What happens instead?
I expect the puttycyg window to close immediately. Instead, it prints
"logout" and sits there until emacs is closed, upon which it exits. One can
also manually close the window and answer an "Are you sure?" prompt.

In the default Cygwin shell and in xterm it works as expected.

I looked at the source code for runemacs:
http://opensource.apple.com/source/emacs/emacs-50/emacs/nt/runemacs.c

I don't see anything obvious there that would cause this behaviour.

can't get this to work

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. I follow the directions to set this up
2. Here's my executable C:\cygwin_putty\puttycyg-20071202\putty.exe -cygterm -
3. it opens a window that says Cygterm - putty at the top and just hangs

I'm using the latest version of Putty. I just updated cygwin for a windows
version of text mate, but otherwise I'm not sure of the cygwin version.
I'm running XP. I have a centrino duo IBM thinkpad.

Thanks.

Weird characters in man pages

Please read the FAQ and check existing issues before creating a new issue.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. man ls
2.
3.

What is the expected result? What happens instead?

I would expect to see readable man pages. Instead, I see weird
characters where a '-' (dash) is expected.

PutTTYcyg version: 20091228
Cygwin version: 1.7.1
Windows version: XP SP3

If you are experiencing performance issues, do you have a multi-core system
or multiple CPUs?

Do you have any firewall software installed?

Please attach your PuTTY configuration. Use this Windows command to create
putty.reg:
REG EXPORT HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY putty.reg

Please provide any additional information below.

I know that Cygwin 1.7 now uses UTF-8 so I set the character set
translation in Puttycyg to UTF-8 for my Cygwin session. Prior to
this, dashes in man pages would show up as 'a' with two dots. Now
dashes in man pages show up has a fat half-height vertical bar.
I don't know if this is a Putty issue or a Cygwin issue. Since
this version of Puttycyg is supposed to work with Cygwin 1.7, I
thought that I would ask here first.

About Console2 Integration

Hi,

first of all I would like to thank you for such a workaround. It is really
pretty good. My question is about integration with console2.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/

It has very nice tab feature. But all puttyCyg instances are being opened in
new window. what I can do to open in a new tab?

Thanks

When starting puttycyg maximized it gets the wrong terminal dimensions

To reproduce:

from command line:
C:\>start /max putty -cygterm -

in the window that opens:
$ stty -a
speed 38400 baud; rows 24; columns 80; line = 0;

restore window and maximize again, and the situation is fixed:
$ stty -a
speed 38400 baud; rows 57; columns 158; line = 0;

This especially bothers me when I make a shortcut that opens puttycyg
maximized, and I only realize the terminal size is wrong after I SSHed
somewhere else. Then the restore-maximize doesn't help.

when puttycyg links to remote server and run gnuplot from there, key [insert. delete, home, end] does not respond correctly

Please read the FAQ and check existing issues before creating a new issue.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. putty to a remote computer (I only have access to one remote computer)
2. run gnuplot there
3. try to delete a character in the command, or move curse to front or end by
pressing Home & End, the action is not performed, but instead display 4~ etc
these kind of combinations.

What is the expected result? What happens instead?
It works fine when in the unix environment, but it does not work as expected
when in gnuplot. The response of the erroneous keys seen in gnuplot are the
following

delete --- 3~
insert --- 2~
home --- 1~
end --- 4~
pgup --- 5~
pgdn --- 6~

Just to mention, these keys are located on an isolated block of keys from the
main character keys. It's a x61s lenovo laptop keyboard. But these keys
function correctly in my winxp operation system.

It could be because of the gnuplot software. I had been to the forum for
gnuplot, but they suggest it could be due to the operation system.

Provide compatibility for recent PuTTY development snapshots?

The 0.60 version of PuTTY that puttycyg is currently based on was released
on 2007-04-29, and is over 2.5 years old. I am unaware of any plans around
PuTTY's release schedule (nothing found on the official web site,
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ ), but have found that
numerous fixes have since been made to the SVN repository (
http://svn.tartarus.org/sgt/putty/ ), including a lot of activity over the
past few months.

The puttycyg patches do not currently apply cleanly to the latest PuTTY
development snapshots. Ideally, a new official PuTTY version would be
released, which a new puttycyg version could then be based on. However, in
the meantime, could a "best effort" be made to provide compatibility with
the latest snapshots in the puttycyg patch, even if no puttycyg binaries
are released? This would also minimize the effort required once a new
PuTTY version is officially released.

Thanks!

Unable to compile from putty-0.60-cygterm-20090811.patch.gz; windres error on puttycyg.ico

What steps will reproduce the problem?

Using Cygwin:
1. $ wget
http://puttycyg.googlecode.com/files/putty-0.60-cygterm-20090811.patch.gz
2. $ gunzip putty-0.60-cygterm-20090811.patch.gz
3. $ ./putty-0.60-cygterm-20090811.patch
4. Observe that the build fails with a windres error:

windres --define WIN32=1 --define _WIN32=1 --define WINVER=0x0400
../windows/putty.rc putty.res.o
windres: icon file `puttycyg.ico' does not contain icon data

The putty-0.60\windows\puttycyg.ico file generated from the patch is
apparently invalid. Windows Explorer does not show this puttycyg.ico file
with an icon. It has a file size of 969 bytes, compared to most other
*.ico files in the same directory that all have file sizes of 4,078 bytes.
 The CRC-32 of the suspect puttycyg.ico is bd53c76a .

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open puttycyg
2. Try to execute a command line app such as mysql client or vim
3. The app never opens, just sits on command line churning away

Ctrl^c to exit.

Which version of PuTTYcyg are you using? Which version of Windows? What
version of Cygwin? Do you have a dual-core system or multiple CPUs? Any
firewall software installed?
